Latest GMail 4.5 APK

I recommend everyone wait to install it via Play Store rather than sideload.

I mean that updates come in waves, not at the same time for everyone like other non google apps do

Actually.. This method allows developers to guage issues and respond to then before everyone gets an app update with a flaw. And at I/O Google announced that this ability was being made available to all app devs, so I wouldn't be surprised if you see staggered updates become much more common among all developers.

I am not a fan of the action buttons on the top now... I'm a big guy with long fingers, and using the app with one hand just is not as easy as it was ;)

I don't mind them on top because I generally use the notification bar commands or just swipe to delete the email.
What I do NOT like is the fact that I only email notifications on my Primary tab. Is there a way to get notifications on my other tabs? I don't see anything in the settings.

I had sideloaded the new APK yesterday, but had to revert back because i wasn't getting any email notifications. Things would sync properly, and emails would show up in the proper places, but i would get no notification in the status bar that there was a new message, and no notification tone would sound either. Anyone else experience this? Happens on both my N4 and N7.

Update: I've received the Gmail update via the Play Store, and the problem still persists. I receive no notifications of any kind when i receive a new email. Anyone else experiencing this?

Update 2: I figured it out. If you're using the new tabbed interface, you have to dive into Settings>Label Settings and manually enable notifications for each tab. Phew!

Just curious as to why you recommend this. I'm sure there must be a good reason but would be nice if you could elaborate. Technically this app is the same that is going to end up on our phones once we receive the update right?. So what would be the downside (from the user point of view) from sideloading the app?

It gets pushed out in phases for reasons, not just to mess with people. I won't pretend that I know every reason but they do exist, so I think if the developer has decided you need to wait a bit longer then I'll give them the benefit of the doubt. Also, we don't actually know that the apk is the same as you'll receive from the proper channels.

It was updated on iOS today so it should be today for Android.

Again.. Phases/staggered update. Everyone will get it soon.

I couldn't update it through play store because I manually installed a dark version so I thought I'll upload the apk just in case someone needed it. I normally wait for updates through the play store.
