Leave a phone at home as a security cam and access it over my wireless network?

My wife and I each have a Galaxy s5 and we use Verizon's network. We want to leave one phone at home, positioned with the screen aimed towards the dog crate area. We want to be able to call that phone from the second phone and have it act as a "nanny cam" of sorts only for the duration of the call. Obviously, to limit data use, it's important for me to have the "nanny cam phone" active only during the the call. And also I should add that "nanny cam phone" will not be dedicated for this purpose but must return to it's primary role as a phone after we return home. Does anyone know how to make this happen? Is there an app for this?

There are webcam apps. The phone acts as a webcam when you're running the app. You can access it over the internet, using the browser on the other phone. (You'll have to set up port forwarding in your router, but that's trivial - and you can go to PortForward's Forum • Index page if you need help with that.) No need to limit data usage on the webcam end, since it's going over wifi, not mobile data. On the other end, only look at it when you need or want to.

You could also try an app called Camera Remote, the free version has ads that arn't too bad.... it uses either bluetooth or a wifi connection with the ability to monitor in real time or take snapshots and videos. The same developers also make an app that uses motion detection to start taking pictures or videos without having to remotely connect first.
