Leaving 4g on

Most of the time I'm plugged in at work and then plugged in overnight, so battery life is not an issue. When I know I'm going to be on battery for long periods of time I turn on Juice Defender, and easily make it through a day with moderate use. (Meaning some texting, light web browsing, e-mail and twitter checking, and listening to device-local music only).

I have Juice Defender at a fairly aggressive setting and I think it does monkey around with mobile network settings as it does its thing. Not sure exactly what because I'm too lazy to figure it out, I just know it works well.

I'm getting lower data speeds on 4G than I used to. I'm not sure if it's a network saturation problem but it's kind of annoying. So I turned wifi on and have been using it whenever I'm home. At work I don't get 4G so it's pointless there. Kinda feel like 4G is a waste at this point

What kind of speeds are you getting? What you might wanna do is go in the Market & pick up, Open Signal Maps. It's very usedul at helping troubleshoot signal issues when you're having troubles. It logs all signal traffic, shows tower locations in you're area and which ones your phone is communicating with. Also has it's own speednet testing tool built in. It's one of the best tools available, I'd pay for it but I can't cuz it's free. My fave app of 2011.

Less than 10mbps download

4G should be way faster than 3G for the same time time and location, Verizon advertises it as 5-12mbps down, are you consistently getting less than 5mbps? If you have a 10mbps+ home internet, and don't get 4G at work, and use it mainly for home and work, then yes, I can see how 4G isn't beneficial to you. But, if you are getting at least 5 mbps down generally speaking, then you are getting the advertised speed. Hopefully they will add 4G to your work area soon.

I was getting 20mbps consistently. Now I'm getting around 10. And on wifi I have 24mbps. And I have wifi at home and my aunts house. At work I don't have it in the building but have it outside. I really like it I just don't see a need when you have wifi available.

If you have fast internet, then no reason for 4GLTE where you have wifi. Wifi will use less power. Speed for me is very dependent on the area and time. I have seen speeds as low as 3mbps and as high as 44mbps, but typically, i see 8 to 12mbps.

So when 4G is turned on and you turn on wifi does the 4G radio turn off completely? Thus saving battery

Yes, it turns off the 4G radio completely when you are on wifi. Once you leave the wifi area, it will activate the 4G (or 3G) radio. One thing to note is that wifi if left on is constantly scanning, so it uses some power there, but minimal.

Less than 10mbps download

Just because it's been inconsistent. You should download the OSM app to see what's going on. You might have interference causing you to bounce between sources. You will have a better understanding of what is occurring between voice and data signals. Widget gives you tower direction your using, location and your voice/data signal strengths, both accurately. Anytime, I have connectivity issues, I check the app and almost always get an idea why it's happening.

I turned 4G off. I find that 42.5 hours a week I'm at work with no 4G signal. At home I have wifi so that's roughly 27.5 hours a week with wifi (only counting time spent awake) and on weekends I don't use my phone that much unless I'm at home on wifi. Usually when I'm out I'm doing something and use my phone for texts, calls, or games and don't need fast data speeds. I figure if I'm gonna be streaming or downloading a huge game I'll be fine.
