Since the 8 was a popular phone it made no sense to keep it in a drawer wasting away.
My Mate 9 might be going bye-bye soon also.
Mainly for the update situation. Why are you ditching the Mate 9?

Ah okay. Mines opposite. OS update > Security updatesMainly for the update situation.
I will hang on if Huawei coughs up a security update. I'm not really anxious for Oreo. Security updates are important to me however.

I feel like I too would rather have security updates than overall software updates.
New features are fun and sometimes useful, but most things can be fixed without OS updates. Apps can update over the Play Store and Google can add features with Play Services. One such example is "fast pair" for bluetooth. It came with the new Pixels' and was later pushed to version 5 I think.Even if your phone is outdated due to lack of os updates?

Google can do some of it for security, but you really need those monthly patches to stay safe.
Even if your phone is outdated due to lack of os updates?
Yup. To be honest, having the latest and newest OS updates doesn't really appeal to me. As long as my phone works, I'm good!
You definitely should. The battery life is insane and the performance isn't far from flagshipsI should get a phone like that. I want a really long battery life too
And that's the important thing. That he got joy out of his honor 8Brought him a lot of joy indeed
