Let's talk about cameras (or recommend me a phone)

Unfortunately, the UI is something you use all the time though, unlike the other stuff. So yeah, UI smoothness matters a lot IMO.

It is. But like I said, the lag issue is over exaggerated. Even so, I get near twice the usage out of a charge, a camera that doesn't give me fits, among a few other things. Any ui hiccups (of which I have rarely at this point) are just software issues that can be addressed.

Look, I loved my nexus 5, but the weaknesses it had, of which there are few, were things I had to deal with on a daily basis. The fam and I had a little vacation recently and I had to put my wife's 5 into airplane mode so it would make it through the day until we got back to our rental... And even then, she eventually switched over to her old P&S Canon since she was getting frustrated with too many blurry shots and videos of our kids. At one point, she asked me why she couldn't have something as good as mine. I don't think she'd buy 'But the ui is so smooth' as an answer.

Everyone's experiences are different, but for me (and my wife for that matter), the G3 is simply the superior device and the best overall phone on the market.

I think the iPhone takes very consistent photos but the nexus 5 overall takes better photos. I will admit the camera software on the N5 drives me nuts at times. I think if Google actually put more effort into the software it could be one of the best if not the best cameras.

As far as battery life goes....my wife has the iPhone 5s. I can say first hand the nexus 5 beats it every day. Battery life seems to be one of the biggest complaints among iPhone users. I think android requires the user to pay closer attention to what's going on with the device in regards to battery drain but unless you're going with a 6 plus I wouldn't count on the iPhone doing any better battery wise than the N5.

Samsung does make good hardware. They have the best displays of any smartphone (better than the iPhone even). It's waterproof, and more durable than the iPhone. It has SD support and removable batteries. It has a fast CPU and lots of RAM. Their cameras are always pretty good, even when they are not at the top.
I'd actually argue against them having top notch hardware. Almost everyone I know who has had a Samsung phone has had hardware trouble with it. Just last week a friend of mine had his Note 3 spark and smoke when charging. My girlfriend's S3 barely lasts 8 hours on a charge (her previous Samsung phone she had to get replaced several times and it still never worked right). Another friend has the S5 and it is plagued with issues such as not being able to handle texts correctly and spotty performance. And those are just the most recent issues. Yes the waterproof/dust proofing is nice. Yes the screens are good (although my M7 screen is still better IMO). Yes the cameras are decent (I could care less about replaceable batteries and SD cards at this point). But my own personal experiences with them are enough to make me avoid them although the Note line is probably the best.

That is not normal for Note 3s. And it is not as if that does not happen to iPhones as well.

The S3 is years old at this point, so it is unfair to compare it to modern phones. And unlike other phones, you can replace the battery in it with an extended battery. I used an S3 with extended battery and easily went a day between charges even with heavy use.

Replaceable batteries are not desirable because they allow you to swap them out when one dies. Replaceable batteries are desirable because you can UPGRADE them. With an extended battery it will even outlast the iPhone 6, Apple's best phone.

...which is due to touchwiz. Not the hardware.

It's not better in objective tests.

the Galaxy S5 is the Best performing Smartphone display that we have ever tested

Samsung Galaxy S5 Display Technology Shoot-Out
That was after they had already tested the iPhone 5s, and the M8. And they are not the only ones to say that. Displaymate runs extremely detailed and exhaustive tests...they don't just eyeball it like we do.

It's not the best, but not because of the hardware. The hardware is awesome.

I completely get it about Samsung and I understand why people like the phones but I cannot get past TouchWiz and the personal experiences I have had with them. I will consider the Note 4 but still hesitant.

For the hardware it's packing it should not be lagging at all. Thats true of all the flagship phones. When the 2012 Nexus 4 is smoother than your 2014 flagship phone, there's a problem IMO.

When art is enabled it's 98% as song as the nexus 5. On battery life and camera quality alone it's worth the very occasional skipped frames.

The best cooked steak in the world will be a lot less appetizing to me if you drop it on the floor. Thats what the Lumia 1020 is to me. I'd rather buy a DSLR than a windows phone.
.
Off topic but I dont like your attitude regarding Windows Phone.WP is really good. Its just too bad that MS is hardly putting any effort in WP but Nokia hardware are more durable and will take a beating unlike fragile flagships like galaxies,xperias,HTC,g3,etc. Nokia hardware has always be great and now WP8.1 brings WP on par with Android.

It's a layout that's not for everyone though, and it has terrible app support

Before I owned a Nexus I used to think the same thing. Now I can't tolerate it anymore.

Well, everyone's entitled to an opinion. Don't you think?

WP problems have nothing to do with Microsoft's effort IMO. It has to do with the OS. It's very locked down and , ironically, very "un-windows". Android is a lot more like Windows than WP is. 3rd party app integration is a core part of Android, just like it is on Windows desktop. So why isn't WP like that too?

I love Windows on the desktop, but don't want it on my phone. I like choices and Microsoft doesn't want to give them to me. At least not on my phone.

So, I've had the HTC One (M7) for roughly a year and a half but I am getting the itch to upgrade. The iPhone6 release seriously has me considering going over to the "dark side" for a number of reasons and I was hoping that the community could give me some alternatives to what I am looking for.

Here are the reasons I am considering jumping over to Apple:
1) Guaranteed updates, for better or worse. I like the idea of having a phone for a few years and knowing that it will be supported for that time. Maybe not all features are usable but it's better than nothing. iOS 8 supports the iPhone 4 which came out over 4 years ago. That is quite the ROI.

2) The camera is still very good. I'm not necessarily a camera snob but I can't for the life of my understand why it's so hard for most Android phones get it right. The pictures aren't bad, per say, but my experience with the Nexus line cameras pale in comparison to the iPhone. I could be swayed to the LG G3 but my concern is that when Android L is released it will get no updates and essentially be obsolete (see point 1). The same could be said about the Sony phones. It just seems that in order to get a decent camera you have to sacrifice in other areas. I love the concept of Moto X (2014) but by all accounts the camera is so-so and the battery is questionable. I likely will never own a Samsung device simply because of Touchwiz and I have had bad experiences with them in the past. Please correct me if I am wrong though, I am open to suggestions.

Those are my main two sticking points although I really do like the fingerprint scanner concept and the Health stuff they have (although I know Google is working on their own) as well as some of the other things Apple has planned. There is always give and take with each phone but I'm struggling to find a phone that meets or exceeds these points on Android's side. As much as I would love an Experia Z2/3 or LG G3 I just don't trust the company or the carrier with updates. The nice thing about the Nexus and Apple devices is they control the updates for better or worse. Even though Apple released a broken update today they could discontinue it at will and a fix is likely incoming.

To be clear, the M7 is a fine phone but it is beginning to show it's age a bit (the battery isn't as great as it used to be) and HTC is still a little slow with the updates. I'm mostly just going off reviews of the other Android phones and my friends/family iPhone 6 impressions so any real world experience would be appreciated. Thanks! O:-)
The best android is (apparently) the M8. Reviews of the M8 say its a small refresh of the M7 rather than a overhaul. This should tell you how good the M7 (still) is. I have been looking around at potential upgrades to my M7 since the IP6 came out (mostly due to curiosity) and I don't see any new devices (including the iPhone) which are obvious candidates. It really is (the M7) that good a phone.

Yeah I'm beginning to feel that way as well. I don't even think the M8 is an upgrade in all places either. Hopefully 4.4.4 will be released soon!
