LG and Android updates

Hey all,

Generally speaking, how good and efficient is LG at updating their major devices? I'm looking at getting either an LG G4 (because it sounds excellent so far and the G3 had a very good track record) or an HTC One M9 with T Mobile. However, I don't have much personal experience with either company. I've heard that HTC tends to do a good job. How do the two companies compare with updates?

Thanks

I know HTC has a 90-day policy where they promise to release major android updates (e.g. Android 5.0) to unlocked phones within 90 days. Besides that, their devs are also rather fast to patch bugs. Also to note, most of their stock apps are updated via Google play, a really smart move cause updates can be pushed directly to their phones without going thru the carriers.

As for LG, the company has had a pretty bad reputation in the past regarding updates. I owned an Optimus G and it only got updated to kitkat more than 6 months after kitkat was released by google, and L would've been coming out by then. But things are getting better though, the company's been paying more attention to pushing updates to older devices, but they're definitely nowhere near as efficient as htc

Hope this helped!

Don't know about HTC because I don't have one. As far as LG's past can't answer that either. I have the G2 on Verizon and it got the Lollipop update before the Note 4 which is a much newer phone. So I would say the present for LG is good.

I'm on AT&T with the m8 and just got 5.0.2. While htc does push out lots of updates on Google play store if you read the reviews there are tons of complaints about them.

If you have a unlocked phone you will get updates faster and with htc you can unlock them pretty easy which I haven't felt the need for doing yet on my M8.

I'm leaning heavily towards the new G4 if it is all that has been said about it, updates or not. FWIW the 5.0.2. Update was well worth the wait on my m8 since it is rock solid without the bugs earlier builds had,so you should balance between updating just for the sake of updating.

I got my Verizon LG G2 in November 2013. Verizon updated it to Lollipop last week, which REALLY surprised me. I really like the phone, and Lollipop is nice, but for me it's a bit buggy. But I have zillions of apps, some of which may not be optimized for Lollipop. I think the biggest advantage the G4 by far is the removable battery. My original G2 was replaced under warranty because it overheated pretty often and killed the battery. Now my replacement G2 is starting to overheat too, especially with Lollipop. And I can't replace the battery.
