LG Exec claims LG won't make the Nexus 5

Do you think Google might stop the Nexus line in favour of "Google Edition" phones from various OEMs? It is something that has been on my mind. I mean they don`t make a profit on the Nexus line per say, and from what I understand, the line was sort of a means of getting more exposure and at the same time, providing unlocked devices for devs. If OEMs are to provide Google Edition phones, maybe the Nexus line wouldn?t be as necessary as it was. What do you guys think?

As time goes by I am thinking that this is becoming more and more likely. First GS4 Google Edition, then HTC One Google Edition, and now all of a sudden LG will not be making the Nexus 5 and that the White Nexus 4 is the end of the line for LG and Nexus. I don't see how there now is enough time for Google and another manufacturer to release the next flagship phone in Nov/Dec, and if they've been working on it in secret, they've done an incredible job of preventing leaks. I also don't see how Google can continue to release a premium phone on par with competitor's flagship phones yet $250 or $300 cheaper.

If you like aluminum, get use to liking scratches in your phone. I know two I Phone 5 owners and their phones are all scratched up in the back.

Apple Says Scratching on New Aluminum iPhone 5 is Normal

And I know two iPhone 5 owners, my wife included, whose phones look fine. If you're concerned about scratches, put a case on the phone. Or handle it with more care. Wear and tear should not be a reason to forgo a material like aluminum.

But even the profit made from the services provided on the Nexus are small compared to the profits generated from the countless other OEMs, the biggest of which is making the new Google Edition phone. If they can get OEMs to offer various stock Developer phones, the Nexus line might not be necessary. Anyhow, I am most likely assuming incorrectly..

I hope you are wrong but I think you are on to something. I am not exactly sure what benefit the OEM's would get out of selling another Google phone. Did LG build market share? Are people more likely to go out there and not buy an LG phone? I don't think LG made any money off the Nexus 4, and they probably had to completely rely on Google for any profits since the phone was sold at such a low price. The relationship between Google and LG seemed to sour when demand far exceeded supply. The most likely OEM (in my opinion) would be Motorola since Google owns Motorola. Any other manufacturer is a direct competitor. I don't see why anybody else would pick up the Nexus line, or any Google branded phone whatever it may be called, unless they are an "up-and-comer" trying to build goodwill and name recognition.

Given that phone production/design cycles are more than six months long

We think that Nexus phones are developed faster than other devices... but even then, you scale 18 months down to what? I find it very hard to believe that any company is going to start from 0 and arrive at a Nexus that's in people's hands 5.5 months from now.

It would make sense if it is a slightly rushed process, as that could explain some of LG's supply issues... but I'm more inclined to take all these denials in the same way that we receive denials all the time about rumored devices. There is no 32GB S4 coming to Verizon.. oops, here it is! There is no HTC One Google Edition... except BAM over there. There is no Verizon HTC One... other than the one they're trying to push out in June. There is no Nexus 5....

Price???

But what do you think about the price of Nexus 5? Will it be as inexpensive as N4 if the OEM is HTC for example?

I think the bigger factor is how much Google is willing to subsidize it. If the N4 is delivering a ton of valuable insights into how people use mobile phones and services, including NFC, then Google might be willing to deeply subsidize its successor. Ditto if those insights are equally valuable to Google's customers: advertisers.

Thank you, this is what I was getting at. Either LG is not making the next Nexus phone (because 5.5 months would be crazy), or they are and are just being coy. Personally I think it's the former, but who knows until the end of the year?

If true, it goes to show you can't believe anything phone execs say. I would take anything at this early of date with a massive grain of salt, even if it does supposedly come from previously reliable (or lucky) sources.

Also, somewhat related, I'm starting to gloss over these early rumors that contain mention of Key Lime Pie. Of course the next Nexus phone is going to include the next iteration of Android; that's pretty much a given at this point. Saying that seems like an attempt to add legitimacy to the whole rumor.
