LG G3 is less than the sum of it's parts...

Anyone else here feel like their g3 is less than the sum of it's parts?

It has an amazing screen, fast processor, plenty of ram, and all the bells and whistles you'd expect from a top of the line phone. However, I find the overall experience to be lacking. I have a suspicion that the software is what's really ruining the experience for me. It just doesn't have the same cohesive feel and smoothness like, for instance, the htc m8 does.

Anyone else here feeling the same?

No. Not sure what this cohesive feeling you're talking about is, but KitKat is KitKat and it's not going to get much better than this unless the OS is upgraded.

I can't say I agree with your "kit-kat is kit-kat" statement. The software "enhancements" that many companies put on their handsets completely change the look and feel of the given version of Android powering it.

I'm sure part of the problem is that I'm used to the buttery smooth and stripped down feel of cyanogenmod. Hoping to be able to flash it on my g3 soon.

(Slightly off-topic...is your avatar pic of a small animal in the snow?)

Based on everything I've read, it's not as smooth out of the box as Sense. The issues are easy to fix, though. Mine runs smooth as silk now. And it's better looking, more comfortable in the hand, and has a bigger screen in a smaller body than the M8. And I'm getting a free spare battery and charger to boot.

What kind of modifications did you make if you don't mind me asking? I'm close to building up the guts to unlock the bootloader and start flashing roms. Getting rid of the bloat must make a huge difference.

This is what I was getting at in my first reply.

I think the strong point is in fact the sum of its parts. I see no real annoying faults I need to live with or update the phone over as I have with every other smartphone I've had, and there have bee a few of those. It is speced higher than I will ever need. You won't see me discussing how I wish it had an 805 processor instead of an 801. A 2.5 quad core is far more capable than I am or will ever need to be. I like the display and the size. I'm pretty happy with the G3.

But certainly nothing is perfect nor will any one thing ever suit everybody. I would say that the best thing you can do to transform your G3 is to ditch the factory launcher. I use Nova but I like Apex too. It makes the phone smoother and it will show faster response.

I have rooted. I will always do that when I can just to be rid of the bloat ware that we all love to hate. In that vein I install SuperSU and Titanium backup. I used the Flashify app to install the Bump recovery image and use Quick boot app for rebooting options. I can't see where custom ROM's can be far off.

Take some care with bloat. Just use Titanium to freeze stuff and pay attention top various forum threads on what is safe to remove.

NOPE.

Mine came yesterday in the mail. It does not include a wall-wart, but it works ok. The cradle is really just a stand... but hey I can't complain, extra battery is very cool.

How do you get the free battery and charger? Is that carrier specific? I am with Bell in Canada....

Got mine yesterday...very cool and convenient.

Did they send you a shipping email prior to receiving it? I was approved 3 weeks ago and haven't heard anything new.

If that question was for me:

Stump rooted and bumped TWRP. Used Titanium Backup to freeze a bunch of carrier and LG bloatware (disabling MLT is a key item, as is Carrier IQ if your phone has it). Installed Trickster Mod and tweaked the Out of Memory and Read Ahead Buffer settings. Running Nova Prime launcher and Swiftkey keyboard (the stock launcher and keyboard both seem to introduce a lot of lag). Enable Developer options and set all the animation scale settings to .5x, or even 0.

I'm also using ES Task Manager to prevent a bunch of unneeded apps from running at startup, which seems to make at least as much difference as freezing bloatware.

Not so much performance related, but I'm also running Xposed and G3Tweaksbox, which is great, and Wakelock Terminator, which can save a good bit of battery.

BTW, all of these changes were made without unlocking the bootloader. That came after everything else. You need to be rooted to make most of the other changes (Nova, Swiftkey and the Developer options don't require root), but don't have to unlock the bootloader unless you're going to flash ROMs.

ROM development is really just beginning for the G3. A number of Devs are working on ROMs, but I'm not sure I'd jump on any of them yet.
