lg g4s manufactured before September have a defect

Got my in July from Best Buy for Verizon. Have had some issues with it but not the phone stuck in boot loop. Have had issues with my texts going through. Did a factory reset less than a week ago and seems to be good again. Battery not draining as quickly anymore but I have noticed some issues with some Google apps not running like they should. Not sure what to do about that. Might just be that I haven't updated all the apps yet since the reset.

I have the boot loop defect. Build date is May. S/N starting with 505 (5=2015 - 05=the month/May). Nothing works to resolve the issue. LGUP, LG bridge, LG flash tool do not work. The phone will not stay powered on long enough to flash the device before it loops or shuts down again.

I have an early model H815 as well, no problems. I am always leery of threads starting with pure speculation stated as 'fact'. There have been a number of people reporting that their phones got stuck in a boot loop, but claims that those issues a due to a hardware problem are pure speculation, as are claims that "any G4 manufactured before [insert random month of the year here] is affected". Look at any Nexus phone or tablet forum on xda and you'll see posts complaining about boot loops after every round of OTAs that Google makes available for their own devices. Many people with Nexus 7 (2013) tablets, for example, had this same problem with almost every version of Lollipop. This is a rather common problem on recent versions of Android and occurs on a wide range of devices and the commonailty seemed to be OTAs that went wrong somehow, not hardware. The more tech-savvy Nexus users tend to fix that problem by wiping their devices and flashing a full current factory image, and then proceed to root them again and add custom recovery images and what not. That process is not quite as straight-forward on non-Nexus devices, but various tools are available. In the case of the G4, you can initiate a factory reset from inside and outside the OS, use LG Bridge to flash the current system image, or use LGUP to wipe and flash the current ROM onto the device.

That's not true, boot loop connected to the PC. PC don't see the phone attached. I have 3 phones so far one is looping today, tried bridge. So far no go

Now the phones are getting a few months old the looping problem is starting to appear. Must be a defect. If you google you will see many users with the same problem.

I bought mine in June. Last week it started the reboot loop. I didn't realize til this thread that others had the same problem. Sprint acted like they never saw the issue before

I am on Verizon and got my phone in August. Bought it out right from best buy since I couldn't stand the smasung S5 I had and it was going to be a year before my upgrade. Phone worked perfect up until Dec 1st when I got some update from Verizon. Then 3 days later it went into a rebooting loop and just died. Contacted LG and they sent me a label to send it back. I just got confirmation they fixed it and it's on it's way back to me and should be here Tuesday which is good because we are leaving for vacation Thursday and I am really missing this phone and hating the Samsung I had to go back too. The repair ticket says Power Management IC(PMIC), what does that mean was wrong? Mary

it's different.. the G4 does it randomly, without any upgrade. "just google it" the phone just dies for no reason.

I don't know if LG would be willing to take yours back as you said you voided your warranty, but it would be interesting to see if the repair ticket would specifically point at the PMIC as with the above poster. After all, spontaneous reboots are not the same as a boot loop, and sudden death is not the same as a boot loop - it's a completely different issue. At least there would another data point as opposed to random speculation and 'omg I found someone on the internet who has the same problem'.

for sure.. mine went through a boot loop for about 4 hours.. then died. I went to T-Mobile and they said people were reporting that issue but when I called LG they said they haven't heard about it. but the sheer amount of people that JUST started talking about it means that something is up. LG told me that I voided my warranty because I tried to self-troubleshoot and they said they'd be able to tell, though I will send it back just in case.. if not, I'm wondering if I can just have the motherboard replaced or what.. my phone was in pristine condition before it bit the dust.

I like how you say pristine. I could second that. My G4 was a beast up until it just died. My new one is too. ;)

I think that some are having issues with updates and that it really isn't an issue with manufacturing.... More luck of the draw than anything else.

Mine was built in July and had the vertical sprint screen freeze issue. My wife's was built in August and had the wi-fi not starting and random (and frequent) reboots issue. Both were on Sprint and have been replaced for free at a Sprint store.

My wife and I both bought G4's the day of release on T-Mobile. As I've said before in this thread, mine died. Hers however did not. Kinda waiting for it though.

well this stuff is kinda scary. I'd hate to be on a trip and have my phone just die on me. mine was made 05/15

I bought my first G4 a week or so after it was released on Verizon. It shut off and never turned back on while on the eBay app. Every referb they've sent me has had issues. Replacement #6 did what is described here and that one was returned. I'm on #7 now and its having WiFi and screen issues.

You'd figure that the cost of overnight shipping by now outweighs the cost of a new G4 or a different make/model of phone. I guess as long as Verizon or LG (whoever "refurbs" these phones) wants me to be their quality control department, I keep going along with it.

TOTALLY unacceptable. I, like many others, do not have a landline. For a phone to suddenly die for no reason while needing 911, this is very dangerous. If this is a wide spread problem LG needs to do a recall and replace every single phone. They might avoid a future law suit that way.

Not everyone is affected, but some of us are. My friend's T-Mobile G4 died and mine died a month after. Dunno if my girlfriend's phone would have been affected since hers was stolen. XD

My advice? Just use and enjoy your phone and hope for the best. It's a two day wait to get a replacement and it should probably be hassle free. I explained what happened to the T-Mobile rep and he ordered my replacement.

I'd also advise you to have automatic backups in place for your photos and to keep important files that you don't want to lose on your SD card.
