LG K4 2017 speech to text

Hi all, nice to be here.

My GF's phone is an LG K4 2017.
If you try and use the mic to create a text message this only works when connected by wifi.
I presume this is because of Google play. Is there a way of using the speech to text when not connected?
Her older Galaxy phone would do this.

Welcome to Android Central! Are you saying this doesn't work when she's connected to the web via mobile data?

Hi B.Diddy, thanks for the welcome.

I don't know if she is or isn't to be honest. Her Samsung Galaxy didn't need to be connected to simply write a text message through the mic but the LG K4 doesn't seem to be able to do the same. If you try, the mic appears but keeps saying "Try again"(or something similar) and never lets you speak a text but when connected to wifi works fine.
Any hints gratefully received.
