from HTC... will not work..

Hi
Sadly when HTC started using versions of gingerbread and above (android 2.3.x) on their phones they changed the permissions required to be able to access the LED hardware.

Therefore "root" is now required to be able to control the LEDs.

For more information on rooting, see our faq page at Light Flow - FAQs

With root access, the app would work in "direct mode" and allow for 3 colors to be chosen (the color limitation is due to the limited hardware in HTC phones)

Cheers
Andrew

So root. I'm sure it won't be hard.

But having only 3 colors is a real bummer. I've really come to rely on Lightflow and the multiple LED colors on my current S3 to let me tell at a glance, without having to turn on the screen, what apps have provided notifications, and whether I need to bother with them now.

This is a real bummer. I tweak the LED on my S3 so I do not need to turn the screen on to see who has sent me what. It allows me to customize the color based on which contact sent me a text or email and I can assign certain colors for different email accounts.

I have it working on my Developer Edition. You do have to root it and run it in Direct Mode and with root access. I can't get the "blinking" feature of the mixer to work, so basically you can have solid Green, Orange or Dark Orange. The One has its own "blink LED" settings for common functions in the Display settings area, so I'm basically using those and then have a couple that the One doesn't do nativly done in Light Flow. The main reason I have Light Flow on the One is to send some specific notifications to my Pebble watch (Twitter and USA Today breaking alerts).

So even after rooting, it will only have three colours to choose from? Because when I put mine in direct mode without rooting it, it has three to choose from. Is there any other application like this that will let you customize the led colour, have pop ups for notifications, turns on the screen when a notification comes up?

Correct. I actually have stopped trying to control the LED on the One, it's so damn tiny and almost invisible anyway. I just let the One control it however it wants. LightFlow is still useful however for having custom notification sounds, sending to Pebble, etc.

Along with the power button, really the only two real faults I've found with the HTC One. The LED is way too small, and pretty much disappears at any angle. I'll definitely miss the robust, customizable light on my S4.

Its strange HTC continues this way, since the DNA had that cool back-side notification light. I guess they think people don't care about them. Both my Nexus 4 and Sony Xperia ZL have really nice notification LEDs. Hopefully the next generation of large HTC phones will move the power button to the side.

I too wonder what the impetus is behind the way their phones handle the LED.

I've at the original Evo, Evo 3D, Evo LTE and now the One and it's gotten worse. The speaker grill on the Evo LTE was so slim that it was difficult to see at certain angles. The OG and 3D had decent sized LEDs, but of course were useless when charging the phone. The OG Evo had a second LED supposedly for WiMax notifications but it was never implemented in any stock configuration.

With the One I just don't get it. You already have the unsightly black dots from the sensors and the camera, why not add an LED that is clearly visible?
