Jerry, in your article here: How to install the Android SDK on Windows, Mac and Linux | Android Central

You show one way to set up the Android SDK. My question is this; I set it up (with Ubuntu 16) via 'sudo apt-get install android-tools-fastboot' and 'sudo apt-get install android-tools-adb'. Is there a difference?

Shouldn't be much difference. Using your package manager probably put it in a different directory that my method, but it also will have set up the aliases to point there. As long as the package maintainer updates it when needed you're good to go.
