lock button opens to app screen

When I turn off my display while inside of an app, then turn the display back on it goes straight into the app instead of the lock screen. I don't have the password setup until 2mins after turned off, but I still want to see the swipe to unlock screen without a password.

I've noticed weird things with the lock screen. I setup a pin, set it to immediately lock with the power button and it never worked.

You either need to enable swipe to unlock or change the timeout period for lock. Or option 3, there's a bug. I'm guessing it's related to the timeout though.

Hello Matt, welcome to the forums! Are you using Moto Display? This will help you to force the swipe to unlock once you pick the phone and you don't need to use the power button.
