lock screen not bright enough outside to see incoming call

twice now I've received a call when outside and I was totally unable to read the screen to know who was calling. once I answered the screen brightened up. anyone know how I can adjust this?

Do you have it on auto adjust? I don't use it because I keep my screen pretty dim, but I do manually put it up in the sun. I can stand in direct sunlight and it's perfectly clear.
