How does the G4 handle locks screen notifications? (sorry for the newb question this will be my first LG phone.)

I'm still figuring this out as it hides the details of my notifications on the lock screen currently. I'm pretty sure there's a way to change it but haven't quite figured it out yet.

When you get a message, email, or notification Android shows a small preview on the lockscreen if you have a lockscreen security measure enabled.

So, you can customize this in settings > Lock Screen > Select Screen Lock. After setting up a PIN, pattern, or Knockcode you’ll be prompted to choose what type of information it shows. If you've already set a lock screen method, you'll have to turn it off and reset it up then it will prompt you again.

It's basically the same way most Lollipop phones do. You still get half of the screen covered by either the swipe area or your pin keyboard, so the little space left gets cluttered quite quickly, thus giving you a 'summary' of your notifications, which you can further expand with a swipe down on the notification area.
