Lock Screen Without Being Locked?

I recently got an S7 and it's great except one thing. I feel like I've tried all options but I wanted to ask here.

I'm looking for a way to have notifications show on the lock screen when my phone isn't technically locked. When I have it set to swipe only it works great but this is a security concern.

When I have it on pattern and set to lock right away it also works as expected.

My question is if there is a way to have a delayed lock, say 5 or 10 minutes, but still have notifications on the lock screen. If I use pattern and have a delayed lock the notifications will turn the screen completely on and shows where I left off if the lock hasn't kicked in yet. I want to avoid using my password every 30 seconds if I'm in a conversation but I also don't want my screen to turn completely on.

I'm used to an iPhone which always shows the lock screen even if unlocked. it's a small thing but it drives me nuts. any way to do this?

Under Secure Lock Settings in Lock Screen and Security you can set the time out for the lock screen.

Yes, but the issue is that if I set an automatic lock time (say 5 min) and receive a notification before that time is reached, my screen will turn completely on to the home screen or however I left my screen when last used. I want just the lock screen to light up with notifications, not the main screen, without my phone being locked. Is it possible?

The only thing I can think of off the top of my head is to use Smart Lock.
