Android Central Question
Hi,
I have a Samsung J7 (SM-J730FZKDLUX) from which I am locked out.
I played a bit with different combinations with the hardware buttons, but no luck:
- Holding the power button doesn't seem to do anything when the phone is off (1).
- Holding the power button + volume down restarts the phone but only the Samsung logo is displayed and nothing ever happens. This mainly works when the phone is already on.
- Holding the power button + volume down then releasing the power button does nothing different (ie, I can't access safe mode).
- Holding the power button + volume down + home button gives me access to the "Download custom OS" window. This is the most consistant way of turning the phone on at the moment.
- Holding the power button + volume up doesn't do anything.
- Holding the power button + volume up + home button when the phone restarts (does nothing when the phone is turned off), seems to turn off the phone (no access to recovery mode). See (1).
(1) When I say that the phone is off, it is only a hypothesis because I have no way of telling whether the phone is actually off or if only the screen is off.
Notes:
1) I do not think I installed anything suspicious though I do not use any antivirus either. The phone was not acting strangely in any way (apart from comment in 6) )
2) I have no way of removing the battery.
3) Removing the SIM card (I only use one even though it's a dual sim phone) doesn't affect the results above.
4) Removing the SD card doesn't affect the results above either.
5) I tried draining the battery by accessing the "Download a custom OS" window, but either that doesn't have any effect or the battery wasn't entirely drained.
6) The phone was updated recently (that version has a bug which marks all wifi as not connected to the internet).
7) Connecting the phone to a computer through a USB cable doesn't do anything, the phone doesn't seem to communicate with the computer.
8) The data on the phone is encrypted.
The only things I see possible are either I send it back to the vendor because it is still under warranty or I can install a custom OS. The problem is I would like to get its data back, possibly not in a million years too (referring to the time support people take to resolve any issue).
Ideally, I would like to use the fact that I can still download a custom OS, but without actually installing a custom OS. I have no idea if that's possible, probably not.
What happened before the lock-out:
I was looking at app updates on the play store which were performed during the night. Suddenly the phone turned off without any apparent reason. I try to turn it on again and it seems to boot normally. As expected it asks me for the password to decrypt the phone's data. However no keyboard shows up. I tapped multiple times on the password field until the phone suddenly turned off again. The phone was locked as described above.
