Lollipop update: need for factory reset after installing

Hi all.

I'm a bit concerned about updating from kitkat to lollipop and not doing a factory reset.

Some users who already updated report problems with legacy apps from kitkat. Some also report that after a factory reset these problems go away.

What are your suggestions? Do you think factory reset and cache partition wiping after upgrading to 5.0 is necessary or advisable for better performance?

I always do a factory reset after major OS upgrade and never had a problem in the past. And it's recommended to at least wipe cache partition anyway.

As far as I know clearing data in recovery mode wipes cache partition as well, but I do both just in case, it shouldn't do any harm.

I never do a factory reset just for an update, and I've never had a problem, except with apps that won't run under the new version. I just wipe the system cache. Doing a factory reset, then reinstalling over 200 apps and all their data isn't something you want to be doing if you have a life. (And that's 200 apps after uninstalling all the apps I've installed to help people here but don't use myself - and not counting all the bloatware that's frozen.)

If an update won't work with just a system cache wipe, I don't take it. (Which is why I don't grab every update the minute it becomes available, and why my main phone is still on 4.4.2 - I don't do secure things on it, so I don't care about the SSL bug.)

Performing a factory resets can have advantages in preventing possible software bugs, especially with major updates. It shouldn't matter, but it can. That's why I try to stay away from iOS, the crap software can get buggy and needs to restore as new.

I only do a factory reset as a last resort if things are screwed up. First thing I try is clearing the cache partition and that usually does it. Across a multitude of Android devices I have or had over the years, I can't recall the last factory reset I did other than when I was doing something unusual like rooting or loading a custom ROM.

If you do a factory setting reset, you should ALWAYS backup your data. Better to be safe than sorry.

Brilliant thank you so if I were to do this right now for talking sake, would I loose anything on my phone? I wouldn't need to back anything up would I?

You would not lose anything - it doesn't affect your data.

BTW, fwiiw, since I don't have Lollipop yet, I have heard this "you must factory reset" thing a lot over the years. Often I find just rebooting the phone the next day after the update does the trick. If it doesn't, then you're stuck, to be sure, but as in Post #5, it is a PITA to FR everything.

Had to do a Back-up/ factory reset after a Verizon lollipop update on my LG-G2.

Hesitation and freeze ups seem to be gone after reset.

I like the update now, typing messages are smoother, more responsive and voice recognizing seems better. Camera comes up faster.

Will have see how long the battery will last with lollipop

I've had this LG-G2 for 1 1/2 years, its been a great sounding phone with a decent camera.

Just for information, I just tried this to see if it would help the sounds and notification problem, and the food mode in camera problems. It didn't help those at all.
I guess I am going to have to do a factory reset to fix those.

Sound and Notification force closes with a pop up and Food Mode in Camera does the same since the update. It's a shame because everything else works great.

Note 4 Lollipop Upgrade Issues Solution

After Verizon finally got around to rolling out the Lollipop update for my Note 4, like many others, I was experiencing terrible battery life, severe overheating and constant app force-closes.

After some research it became clear that a hard reset was something I was going to have to try before probing any deeper. Bottom line, it worked.

First, I did the usual backups, making sure to backup my Nova Launcher settings to Google Drive. Next, I made sure to turn off two step verification on my Google account. Finally, I did a cache partition wipe, followed by a full hard reset as described in the article below, not the "factory reset" that can be found in the options menu. Not sure if the cache wipe made a difference, but hey, I was already in the neighborhood.

You'll be reset to Lollipop, not Kit Kat, if your're wondering. Then your Google Play apps will reinstall for an hour or two (did I really install that many apps?). You'll pretty much have to launch and sign back into every app on your phone once, tweak your widgets and then...

You get the Lollipop goodness you were hoping for before Lollipop broke your heart.

I've got a feeling these problems have been caused or contributed to by garbage collection issues in Android. The more you've installed and uninstalled lots of stuff under Kit Kat, the more issues you're likely to have after the upgrade, which made my problems more severe than most.

I've done numerous hard resets, I've even flashed ROMs (standard OEM roms, not rooted or modified roms) and I'm always getting the same results. Battery life is poor. Performance is good, but very large amounts of lag while:
Pressing multitasking button or recent apps button, whatever you want to call it.
Reviewing a photo just taken from the default camera by Samsung.
Trying to send or edit an image just taken.

I'm looking forward to 5.1 any time soon. If not, I guess no device on 5.0.x will be a good choice seeing as many devices have many problems on 5.0.x

Nexus maybe? Lol.
