Long time iPhone user switched to GS3!!

im scared still to plug my s3 into an amp at a party incase it ends up in same state as my CDs lol ;)

global s3, UK. Ask me anything and ill reply even if its just an intelligent (or stupid) guess ;)

I did use Nova Launcher, and then tried Apex, but the additional memory usage from these is just not worth it to me over touchwiz.

Hi guys, I'm also a new Android owner after years of ios. I wanted to know if using launchers like Apex or Nova reduced or maybe increased battery consumption?

Also, I have been looking for a good starting guide to Android. I'm a tech guy and I love to understand the software I play with. I'm looking to maybe root in the future. So, if any of you have a suggestion please by all means pm me or something. Very appreciated

From my experience using the Apex launcher has not reduced battery life or performance on my phone. I got the pro version so it can notify me how many missed calls / texts I received above the phone and messaging app.

Go Launcher is usin 1% of my batt' as you can see but Go is a bit out-dated and everyones using Nova Prime or Apex now, i just have to get round to playing with Nova.
Go is completely free though with all (i think) the features of Nova Prime

The iphone 5 is essentially already built into the samsung galaxy s3 as well as all android phones. All you have to do is open up your app drawer and stay there and never leave from that screen. Ios is just a bunch of icons so anytime you unlock your screen, have it go directly to app drawer and open up your apps from there.... Ha Ha! oh my god how boring is that... oh god i can't even imagine never using a widget again. I feel sorry for iphone users who close their minds off to android phones.. pshhhhhhh. thankfully I left that world behind me :D

Thanks I'll give that a shot... Will make a review once I get the case. I have AT&T btw.
Well it looks like another member SenseMonkey has posted a recent solution to your question about turning off LTE/4G, or at least being able to switch to 3G instead... take a look at his posting in the AT&T SG III forum. Cheers and luck! :)
Edit: And BTW, trivor's earlier comment about the app Phone Info is correct. The issue is that not many people know which option to pick to get what they want, and sometimes that option isn't readily available in the selection list (depends on the carrier). Manually creating the APN like in SenseMonkey's posting (and others as well) is a sure way to give yourself options and flexibility to switch back and forth as desired.

Hi, I just left my 4s for the GS3 and am having so many problems recieving texts from people who have iphones. Their phones are still trying to send me "imessages" so I don't get them. I've tried multiple things, I deactivated my iphone on the apple website and tried a few other things and the only thing that has worked is if they change their settings on their phones. they have to turn off the imessage feature. This is redic! have you had this problem? I love the phone but not getting texts is a huge problem. Does anyone know anything else I can try??

im not sure what imessage is tbh. can u explain mate?

Bro, when you go into the settings-> messages in an iphone, you set the preference to be reached. If by any chance in yours you said to be contacted by Apple ID then that's the reason why. Also, the setting can be remember on your friends phone so if their phones are set to message you thru your Apple ID, then their phones will only send messages to your Apple id and not your actual number.

However, to be honest this didn't happen to me when I switched.

so its really apples fault for their need to be "different" and non-universal and not google or the s3?
none of my close friends have iphones

It's not really Apple's fault. Thanks to imessage people can communicate with their ipads and ipods. I never tweaked my imessage and that's why I didn't have that problem. Maybe the other poster did. Anyways, it's just one of those software problems that few people encounter.

FYI, I think it's fixed. I found a post somewhere and the person suggested using a friends iphone and logging them out and logging myself on using my apple id. At that point turn imessage off and log back out. Ever since I did that about 3 hours ago it has been working. I hope it is truly fixed this has been a big issue. I am going to make sure the people at the Verizon store where I upgraded are aware, if anyone switches from and iphone to anything else they need to turn off imessage prior to deactivating the iphone. Would have been nice to know this prior to trading my phone in! thanks for everyone's help.

But wanted to start my own thread with some questions and help out some newbies like me.

First off a big thanks for the folks that helped me out here.

Coming from macrumors, most people like to post pics so I decided to do the same here.

I had the original iPhone, 3G, 4 and now a white Galaxy S3 since middle of August.

Not a fan of the touchwiz but changed the launcher using Apex (found in play store no need to root). My home screen looks more like HTC Sense.
Only downside to the Apex launcher not sure for Nova, is that some apps need an extra line of spacing and will get cut off but Touch Wiz will display it correctly.

Notice the font for Apex Menu and Apex Settings is cut off, how do I fix that?
My Bank of America app carries the same results.

Here are some Pros and Cons for the S3 (won't list them all)

Pro:
  • Large screen size
  • Removable battery / SD card
  • Physical home button
  • Accurate speech typing anywhere a keyboard is used, great for texting :)
  • Good call quality with available EQ for phone calls!
  • Loud speaker phone
  • Good LTE speeds in LA and OC varies city to city.
  • Included in earphones are much better than the iPhone, can't speak for the revised "earpods"
  • Almost anyone has a micro-usb cable/charger laying around vs lightning bolt
Con:
  • Battery life not as great as iPhone 4 most likely due to my residence being located in a weak LTE zone, so the phone continually searches for a LTE signal. Wish there is a switch to turn that off. iPhone 5 may give me the same results as well.
  • Can't see screen in direct sunlight
  • Prefer separate volume buttons vs rocker style
  • S-Voice not on par with SIRI but Jelly Bean with Google Now should address that. However, I am content with Ice Cream Sandwich.
  • Need Android specific head/ear phones I personally love the Bose in ears. MFI (Made for iPod) won't play nice with the S3
*edit* the volume control will not work.
Bose IE2 Headphones - Audio Headphones - Bose Headsets and Headphones
  • Can't move apps to the "real" SD card, in the system the S3 displays 2 SD cards. sdcard= storage inside phone extSdCard= removable storage

Anyone know if it will be possible to move apps to the removable SD card??

Accessories:
Bought a partial metal back door from ebay
If anyone is interested in getting the same thing, provided tracking number and took 2 weeks to deliver to So Cal.
Aluminum Back Cover Case for Samsung Galaxy S3 / i9300 (White/Grey) | eBay

The oem one is on the left side for comparison, notice the aftermarket has an extra notch on the right side.
Both snap very well and is easy to take off but the oem has more flex when removing since it's thinner.

With the metal cover it kills my wifi pretty good but celluar and GPS reception is fine. This will also prevent you from using NFC.

Next cases on my list to buy...
iface revolution (beware of fakes on ebay, the real deal runs for ~$27)

Like all/most of you, I too just switched from from ios after msny years. I've been on it a week, I think ill stay, I want to stay but there are some things that I have questions about.
1- the keys on the board are so small, I am constantly misspelling words. Yes, i turned off the auto correct because it was wrong more than correct. However, I do love how the keyboard offers symbols and numbers. Thats just genius. But I miss how ios usually picked got what I was saying. I really miss how blackberry had the option to spellcheck the whole thing when you were done typing.

2- I love the google voice options but not the Samsung. If I root the phone and install jellybean will I be able to have google be the default voice feature when I doubke tap my home button?

3- battery does suck compared to my 4s and takes a lot longer to charge. I have that same battery on my amazon wishlist, hyperion I believe is the name in the event that I keep it.

4- I have over 100 GBs of music in iTunes and was wondering what everyone is using to transfer their music over. I have yet to search this forum but its on my list yo do this weekend. My wife is probably going to stay on ios. She had tiny hands and this S3 is too big for her but she is open to the mini if it comes out before turkey day. So I may need to have double mudic libraries. One in apple lossless snd the other in some other format.

Thanks in advance for any responses. I will say this, exploring the possibilities of android is exciting. It reminds me of the blackberry days on crackberry.com trying to tweak the phone because of very limited memory and maximizing battery life.
