Longtime iPhone user thinking about switching to Pixel 2XL

Many years ago I used to enjoy my BB8330 on sprint. Then the EVO 4G came out and I switched to android. I loved it at the time but, Android was not too stable and buggy. There was no consistency with the OS beside 2hr battery life. Then iPhone came to sprint, so I jumped from gingerbread to IOS 5. My iPhone 4S was perfect with no lag, crashes, or bugs. Fast forward to the present with the "Tim Cook Apple" and iOS is becoming what android used to be. I refuse to update my os because iOS 11 is terrible and unusable. Apple is loosing their quality. I watch a lot of tech YouTubers and they all use Pixel 2XL. Has anyone moved from an iPhone to Pixel and had regrets?

I've come from an iPhone 7 to the Pixel 2 XL and I do not regret it for one second. I thought I would miss iMessage, thats about it. However in reality, I don't. Everything about the Pixel 2 XL amazes me and the camera is just amazing!

It's really all about what ecosystem you are more entrenched in. If you you're not overly committed to either then it's completely subjective what phone you want to use. Both are great and from a functionality stand point; almost the same.

No clue what your issue with IOS 11 is though. It's been fine for me.

I agree completely with this. Also no clue what your issue(s) is/are with OS 11. I’m on OS 11 and have no problems what so ever.
On pretty much all top tier phones now there is very little difference between the cameras. All are capable of producing great photos.
If youre tired on Apple and want a change, then make the change. Pixel may be your best Android bet, at least you will get timely updates.

I have been taking part in iOS betas since iOS 7 on my iPhones. iOS 11 has had the most betas over the summer and still had bugs at launch. Luckily I was able to downgrade my daily driver back to 10.3 before the release. I have a 2nd iPhone for work and an iPad running 11.2.5. They both shut apps down, numbers and pages close with a message "iCloud was unable to save, progress loss" and I have to restart all over, apps will get stuck on each other and become unusable, random respring, etc. In fact cnet recently did a video on the bugs. That's my problem with iOS and the trend of apple these days, half baked. It's amazing how much we rely on tech and expect perfection especially with devices costing upwards of $1000. Pixel seems like the new "steve jobs era Phone" where software just works, and hardware close to perfect.

I just switched over from an iPhone X to a Pixel 2 XL and so far I love it so much that I got rid of the iPhone. That being said I was an Android user before the iPhone X, so it's not like I'm new to Android either.

Sorry to hear you’ve had so many problems. I am running the latest 11.3 beta and I’ve had no issues on my X.

How is the size difference suiting you? My favorite part about the X is the body to screen ratio - I felt it is perfect. The 2XL is probably the largest and widest phone I have tried in hand since the Nexus 6. I remember the 6P would drive me nuts when I owned it and anytime I would get in my car (which has bucket seats), it would jab my hip.

I actually found the X screen to be too small. I like big phones. It's definitely personal preference though.

I've gone back and forth a few different times...stock Android in my opinion is the best way to go...I try to keep it to all of the preloaded Google apps for everything, as well as the stock Pixel launcher, and find it the most enjoyable...I've taken a more minimalist use approach and find myself enjoying my Pixel 2 more than any phone I've owned.

IOS 11 on my iPad 10.5 constantly has app freezes. Sometimes the entire iPad locks up. Most of the time I have to delete apps from memory to get them to work right. "It just works" - right...

My two biggest concerns on switching are security issues since android is such an open platform, and quality of apps. My dad uses a moto z something and the software seems so cheap, no offense. His note taking app has ads at the bottom, his calculator app, ads. Also messages app seems choppy. Would the pixel have these issues?

As someone who uses both I prefer Android and Pixel. My iPhone is for work and I hate it.

Since the Pixel is a current Google device you'll get monthly security updates, which should take care of any known security loopholes that are out there. You're unlikely to get that from any other Android device OEM except perhaps BlackBerry.

If you used exactly the same applications as he does then you'd see those ads - sounds like he's using free/pay for applications that are ad supported: as long as you use the free version you'll see ads. Note that the stock note and calculator applications on the Pixel are not ad supported but perhaps he needed some extra features that are not included in the stock applications. If he purchased the paid/pro updates to those apps he should no longer see those ads.
I have no issues with the stock messaging app on the Pixel 2 XL but I use a 3rd party application because it has an additional feature that I find quite useful.

Sounds like your dad chose to install apps with ads rather than pay for them. I have none of those issues because I don't install apps with ads. There are many choices.

I use Google Keep for taking notes...no ads. I use the stock calculator...no ads. Textra is smooth as can be on my 2XL. As others have stated, you can't blame Android for the fact he chose to install ad-supported apps.

As already indicated by others, sounds like free apps are the main issue. No choppiness with anything on the Pixel 2 series.

It's usually only a few dollars to get an ad free version of an app. I always opt for ad free versions.
I use the stock Android Messenger (it's ad free) on my Pixel 2 XL 128 and it's fast and smooth.

iOS 11 was kind of hit and miss in terms of smoothness/reliability up until 11.3/4. Now most of the issues have been resolved, but it left a lot of people with bad opinions on iOS 11 (rightly so)

If you want to avoid ads, pay for apps. There are lots of really great apps for Android and are well worth the money.
