Ok, my S III arrives via Fed Ex tomorrow. I've been with Verizon before they were Verizon and have had many new devices, but all were bought in the store and activated by the VZW employees. My email shipping notification had a link to click for assistance on setting up your phone when you receive it, and after inserting the sim and charging the battery, the first thing was to set up Verizon Backup Assistant. Really? Why would they even want you to fool with that when all my contacts are on Google? Am I missing something? Won't my contacts come to the phone automatically when I sign in to my Google account?

To those of you who have ordered and activated your own devices before, any other advice or things I should skip so I don't end up doing a reset later because of an error? Any apps that you should not load first?

Make sure to check your paperwork. Mine had the wrong # assigned and the order date was incorrect. They insisted that I ordered on 7/3 when in fact I ordered my phone on 6/6. Lucky I saved my email confirmation indicating the 6/6 order date.

Whoa i thought u were implying you are not currently with verizon? But if u have the droid charge then u must be cause it is a verizon phone.......
But activating is pretty easy and if ur worried u can bring it to the store or just call and activate. I heard online had issues.

I activated online with no issues, even kept my unlimited data. I'd also skip the Backup Assistant (I did); after all, you can run it later if you really need to. The process was pretty painless overall.

I have never used the Backup assistance, always use Google and never had a problem.
