Looking for advice - Used Droid X running Froyo

I'm looking for some advice on what I should do with my Droid X that I bought used from Ebay.

The Droid X is my first smartphone and I've been mostly happy with it. It does occasionally force close when I'm using Google's Navigation App and occasionally the screen loses its touch sensitivity but that's been the extent of my problems.

I bought the phone used because I wanted to lock in Unlimited Data with Verizon but I didn't want to enter into a two-year agreement with any of the phones that were available at that time.

Here's the issue - the Droid X is running Froyo and I've been reluctant to upgrade to Gingerbread based on all the issues I've read about. I'm virtually certain my phone was rooted because when I agreed to accept the recent OTA update I received a "Clockwork Recovery" screen and the upgrade failed.

I'm reasonably computer intelligent and plan to keep this phone for at least another six months.

What should I do - keep the phone as is (Froyo) or jump through the hoops and upgrade to Gingerbread?

If I do a Factory Reset, will I lose the root? As a moderate user do I even want root?

Sorry for so many questions but I'm looking for some advice and there seems to be a lot of conflicting statements about how well Gingerbread is working with the Droid X.

Thanks in advance for any help or ideas. :)

GB for me is awesome. I think it would be worth it to get on GB and if you decide you miss root, you can alway root GB easily.

Yea even going as far as using the .sbf file to flash a clean install(unknown stats/habits of previous user) of Gingerbread, update it to 605(its a keyboard fix patch) then root it yourself and you should be good to go. If you have anything now back it up to the SD card so you can have it again.

Thanks for the information. I've read so many threads/posts about people who've had problems with GB on the X that it really had me concerned. It's good to hear that GB on the X is working awesome for you.

This is what I want to do - especially the part about removing the stats/habits of the previous owner. (The phone has a SuperUser App on it that I've never been able to uninstall.)

I'll do some searching and see if I can figure out how to do a clean install of GB by using the .sbf file.

Thanks for the information. :)

For those who may read this thread with a similar situation here's what I found after I did some searching - click here

I watched the YouTube video in the above post I linked above and I'll give it a try later tonight and report back. :)

Thanks to those who offered their advice - I figured out the process and my X is now rocking a fresh copy of Gingerbread. :)

So far it's been a good thing - the phone's been working flawlessly and it seems a bit faster than it was with Froyo. Time will tell if I develop any of the issues reported by other users.

On a side note, I downloaded LauncherPro for the simple reason I wanted to hide all of Verizon's bloatware. LauncherPro seems great and I really enjoy going to the app drawer and seeing that all of the bloat is gone.

Just a quick update for those who are still running Froyo and wondering about Gingerbread.

For me, the transition to Gingerbread has been mostly positive and my X no longer locks-up when I run Google Navigation. I like the Gingerbread look and I'm still convinced the X runs faster that it did with Froyo.

On the downside, the biggest issue would be the diminished GPS and 3G capabilities - both still work but they don't work as good as they did with Froyo. Based on what I've read these issues are common with Gingerbread and Motorola hasn't made much progress in fixing them.

Overall, the positives outweigh the negatives and I'm glad I transitioned to Gingerbread and I've become a HUGE fan of LauncherPro. :)
