Looking for suggestions for my girlfriends rooted S4

So, I rooted my girlfriends AT&T s4 a while ago, mostly to use adblock and wifi tether. However, that was a while ago and she is running 4.2.2 stock rom. I honestly don't remember if I unlocked the bootloader - is it possible to root without unlocking on this device? There is no unlock symbol when I reset it. I know there is not a custom recovery on it. I know that KitKat is out for the s4, but I've heard people complain about it.. I just wanted to get some suggestions on what I should do.. She's somewhat techy as she used to jailbreak her iphone herself. Just looking for some suggestions.. I'm thinking it would be best to just install a rom, something without all the bloat. If there is a AOSP rom that was VERY stable, I wouldn't be against that either.
