I've been thinking of rooting my thunderbolt for a while now, and just when I was getting ready to with the Revolutionary method, I get the OTA. I wasn't thinking of the consequences at the time.

Has Revolution updated their method to work with the OTA? The latest threads about this are a few days old, maybe something got done. I saw this thread [HOW-TO]Downgrade to get S-OFF after updating to latest OTA 2.11.605.9 about removing the OTA update, but it requires data wipe. I am trying to root without losing any data, and, while doing what it says in that thread will make Revolution work, it kind of defeats the best part (in my eyes) by making you wipe data.

So, I'm asking you guys if there's a way right now to root, be it a 1-step with the OTA or 2-step by removing the OTA, without needing to wipe data. I'm new to this stuff, so I don't 100% understand some of the terminology like "S-off," but I get all the parts with ROM's, etc.

Thanks everyone, great to finally be a part of the forums.

sorry, but at this current time, unfortunately you'd have to downgrade from what you are now on (.9) to 0.5.
and that method means data wipe.

I too ran into this with my wife's phone. I'm rooted though I also didnt think of the consequences when I upgraded hers. I want to root hers though we both havent had the time (I will need her phone for a while).

only thing I can recommend is, in the meantime, get mybackup pro and backup all your sms, apps etc., then when you load the previous RUU which has the .5 radio, then use revolutionary, then after being rooted, load the rom (or a custom one), and then restore all your sms, apps with mybackup pro.
the only drawback i found to doing this is that i will not be able to use titanium backup until she'd be rooted, so that means that all of her app data would have to be entered again, as well as if she had anylevels finished on a game like angry birds , she'd have to start over. Mybackup backs up apps, but not the data in the apps (your individual settings in each app) - titanium will do this, but only if you have root.

after you gain root, you can then bump the radio up from .5 back to .9.

or, we could both wait it out until revolutionary updates :-D (I have to wait anyways until both she and I have time, and maybe hopefully revolutionary will be update by then)

if you want to downgrade, follow UpstreamMiami's link (post #140), click on it, and it gives instructions:
http://forums.androidcentral.com/ve...150-offering-root-service-14.html#post1497859
Once that is done, proceed with revolutionary etc etc.

hope that helps some :-D

EDIT: mybackup pro/root and titanium will both backup app data, but only with root. mybackup pro will restore apps, but not data if not rooted.

Thanks a lot, helps a ton. I think my best bet would be to wait for revolutionary to update, given my inexperience. Any idea on the timetable for that update?

i wish i knew myself. :-(
lets make a deal, whoever hears of the relevant info first, update it here :-D

I'm guessing you want root just for debloat? The main reason for rooting is for the custom ROMs. You'll have to wipe your data each time you flash a new ROM. So if you're going to flash customs ROMs you might as well go ahead and flash the old RUU Let Google reload your apps, reinstall the apps it misses and if you want there are a couple of apps that can restore your sms, mms, call history etc. Don't be intimidated it's not that big of a deal after a little while you'll get the hang of it.

I would just do that, but I'd like to keep the data for the apps I have. One in particular, I use to monitor my diabetes, I definately want to hold on to all the data I put into it.

Most of us that rooted back in the day had no choice but to do a full wipe!

I do understand not wanting to delete all of your data, especially since most of the apps that can be used to back up that data don't work unless you're rooted! (catch 22).

May be worth it to at least check out MyBackup to see if it can at least backup some of the data you're trying to save. Granted, it is able to do much more on rooted phones, but it does have some non-root capability as well.

The problem is that the newest update probably patches whatever exploit Revolutionary was using to gain root...which also means that it's not as simple as just "updating Revolutionary" to work with the new software, but rather finding a different exploit (if possible) that can be used to accomplish it. Granted, I don't know if this is truly the case or not, but if this doesn't completely make sense to you, the bottom line is that you may be waiting for a LONG time, and there's no guarantee a "new" Revolutionary will become available at all.

I'll see about MyBackup... I would be willing to do a wipe as long as I can save data for a couple specific apps. Is there any way to back up my AWD Launcher EX setup?

The only issue is that it requires data wipe. Why give your serial number and such to HTC (and thereby Verizon) if you could downgrade to pre-ota and get full root (with s-off) with Revolutionary?

Sorry, didn't see your post until now, laser... The apps I really needed had an option to back up to my computer, so that was fine, though I did end up losing the rest of my app data. No big deal, now I can enter the world of custom ROMs! Thanks again for everyone's help
