Lost timeline in Google Maps

Somehow about a years worth of data from the timeline of Google Maps has vanished. It's probably something I did. Can they be recovered and how can I be careful not to let it happen again. Thanks.

Sounds like you deleted your Location history.

Taken from, View or edit your timeline...

"Delete all of or part of your Location History
You can delete all or part of your location data. Deleting location data takes it away permanently and neither you nor Google will be able to see it again.

Open the Google Maps app Google Maps.
Tap the Menu > Your timeline .
Tap More three vertical dots > Timeline settings.
Under "Location settings," choose Delete Location History range or Delete all Location History."

In answer to the 2nd part of your question... stop pressing buttons until you know what they do, old son!
