LOVE the phone... can't take the battery.

I wonder if some of the OEM batteries are bad... I charge my phone once at night and it lasts me a good 6-8 hours. This is with surfing, email, phone calls, etc. I don't use a task killer and I use live wall paper.

All I can say is give it more time as you have 30 days to return it. You may want to call Sprint and complain about the battery; maybe they'll send you a new one.

Okay I'm pretty certain something is wrong in your situation. The first day I had my Evo, I didn't change any settings at all. I had it 100% charged, took it off the charger, played with it all day long, and my battery didn't die for at least 6-8 hours. Now after tweaking the settings to maximize battery life and cycling the battery power a few times, I can go 12 hours with moderate use no problem.

Two things I can say that should help a lot:
1) Get Advanced Task Killer (or something similar) and tell it to auto kill your apps. I noticed a lot of my apps stay alive for quite some time after I "close" them, and plenty of apps open on their own (still don't fully understand this).

2) Go to Menu -> Settings -> Wireless & Networks -> Mobile networks -> Turn off "Always on Mobile data". I can't find anyone who knows EXACTLY what this does, but it gives you an informative warning when you disable it and my work e-mails/messages/calls/etc (all the important stuff) still come in just fine and on-time, so it doesn't seem to affect the important stuff. I feel like an ass telling you to do something that I don't understand the meaning behind, but I noticed an immediate power improvement upon doing this and like I said, I get all the important stuff still, so I'm fairly sure it only affects basic apps.

Hope that helps for now. You should definitely also try cycling the battery power. In case you're wondering about what I'm talking about, a lot of people suggest that when you have a new Li-on battery, you should drain it 100% and then charge it 100% (ie. don't charge it when it's only 50% dead). I had one battery where this did nothing to help, but on my Palm Pre it did wonders, so its up to you. Good luck. I'd suggest perhaps just having your battery replaced and seeing what that does. Maybe even trade with a friend for a day or two just to see. Could just be a faulty battery.

I've actually been happy with the battery. Its much better than my Palm Pre battery. I pulled mine off the charger at 11pm last night and had heavy use between 8am - 2pm before it died (I let it die so I could test it). I am using an app killer. I would kill apps like Facebook and twitter when not in use, since its probably doing regular updates, which will kill the battery. I would also take a look at battery usage info in settings. This gives you a look at whats eating your battery in percentages. You might see twitter or some other app is really draining the battery.

I just set Advance Task Killer Level to Aggresive and made auto kill frequency every half hour...also security level set to medium. I'll taking phone off charger at 60% AT 7:20 PM

My battery life is about the same as the OP's. I just used the tip link posed by pedromartinez and set the ATK settings to those listed above. Hopefully this helps as I am in the same boat. Battery lasting 3-4 hours with moderate use.

You guys need to go into settings and see what apps are devouring your battery.

ATK is NOT a solution, it's a coverup for the actual problem.

Not sure about ATK not being a solution... in the 40 minutes since i've installed and adjusted the settings... i've lost ZERO battery life. I'm actually in shock. I'm actively using the phone to see if i can get the battery to decrease (oops... it just decreased by 2 percent)..... I'll take that... I'll keep an eye on it till 8:20.. but this has already been night and day.

2 questions: are you running live wallpapers and do you have auto-brightness on? Uncheck the auto brightness and set up a widget to control brightness for when you really need it (indoors 20% or so is sufficient) - and take off that live wallpaper.....I know it's cool. I DO. I miss my Aquarium, but it helps.

what is point of the phone if I have to turn off all the cool features to get more than 2 hours of batt life......not an answer.

1. It's your signal. Period.
2. Killing background tasks does not increase battery life. Apps that are backgrounded use no resources or processor time.
3. Run logcat and check the output when you cover the phone with your hand. Use autobrightness, because you can't duplicate that.
4. See number 1.

Been off the charger since 10 AM, running live wallpapers, syncing: mail, twitter, news, weather, stocks, fring, google voice, google chat and Qik, been installing and testing apps for blog posts on the front page, wifi, GPS and BT on 24/7, and even spent about an hour video chatting once Phil got me sorted on how it works.

Still have ~55% battery

I hate double posting, but I'm gonna lol.

Sounds like one of the apps you have killed off was misbehaving and wouldn't sleep. Check your uptime vs awake time in settings>about phone> battery

What is logcat? an app?

It's part of the SDK. I can save ya the trouble of loading it up:

Anytime the light sensor sees a difference of more than 2% it sends signal to the hardware. The hardware can scale the brightness of the screen in 1% increments, and this is a sliding scale where:
0% light sensor = 15% Screen brightness
50% light sensor = 70% screen brightness
100% light sensor = 95% screen brightness

It will fire off a signal as fast as you can cover the light sensor. I've been playing with it for a couple of days seeing if I can make a motion detector out of the Evo using the light and prox sensors lol.

Which would even emphasize the need for an app killer... the phone did not monitor itself.

All i know... is that since installing ATK.. i've lost 8% battery in an hour and 5 minutes. I'm no expert... but I like those numbers.

I actually feel like i can go outside and actually use the phone now.

I have been using mine steady all day starting at 7am till now 7:30pm with tons of calls & running apps and my battery is at 50%. I think some people may have gotten lucky with the battery & some didn't.
