Hi everyone,

I am slowly starting to look for a replacement for my beloved Lumia 950 :( I need help!

I'm looking to get something as close to that as possible features-wise, below are the most important features in no particular order. I'm not sure if I can tick all the boxes with current or upcoming Android lineup but the more the better. I'm also not yet sure what features I can live without when switching, I guess I'll go on case-by-case basis after seeing what the trade-off is. I want to get the phone off contract, without carrier bloatware and simlock, has to be available in Europe. I'm open to any suggestions :)

  • OLED/AMOLED display
  • Always on display, at minimum clock and notifications displayed, ideally have a bing wallpaper on there, like on Lumia (not sure if that's even possible on Android)
  • Dark interface available
  • Double tap to wake or front fingerprint reader unlock
  • Good camera: OIS, good colour representation, low light would be a bonus, don't like software over processing
  • Ability to shoot in RAW
  • Fast charging
  • Wireless charging
  • Headphone jack
  • Large internal storage or replaceable storage
  • Dedicated camera button
  • Ability to launch camera from lock screen
  • Battery that will last throughout the day
  • Android as close to stock as possible with good track record of being kept up to date

Welcome to Android Central! A few ideas have come to mind after reading your post. Here are two phones I recommend. They won't tick off all of your boxes, but I believe they are good choices:

Samsung Galaxy S9
- headphone jack
- AOD
- excellent camera
- super AMOLED
- good battery life
- will launch camera from lockscreen
- wireless charging and fast charging
Cons: not as swift with getting software updates; not stock Android (but can download a stock-like launcher, like Pixel Launcher, to accommodate)

Google Pixel 2/2 XL
- stock Android
- will get updates right after they are released; good track record with updates
- AOD
- good battery life
- double tap to wake screen
- excellent camera
- AMOLED screen
- unlimited photo storage
- fast charging
- will launch camera from lockscreen
- will do dark mode with launcher if your wallpaper is darker in colour
Cons: no wireless charging, no headphone jack

If I think of any more phones that fit your criterion, I will add to this post! Keep us posted on what you decide!

Hi Morty2264 - thanks for the warm welcome :)

I was considering both options you mentioned, however with their price points (especially the larger storage variants) I was wondering about other options as well. I was also looking at OnePlus 6, but I'm still waiting for more in-depth reviews.

Someone also suggested LG V30 (which incidentally I can currently buy at a heavy discount) but I'm unsure about the screen discoloration when viewing it at an angle - from what I've seen it can be pretty bad. Need to dig into that one a bit more, I didn't consider it lately.

Does Pixel 2 come with a dongle to plug in wired headphones?

You're welcome! Glad to have you with us!

They do have some hefty price points! The OnePlus 6 is a good option as well... It should have double-tap-to-wake (the 5T does), and it has a good battery and a headphone jack. It does not have AOD, however. It seems to have good camera specs, but I'd wait for review videos to ensure any phone you are considering would give you the camera performance you would like. Yes, the Pixel 2 does come with a dongle, so that accessory is taken care of. :)

With regards to the V30, a good friend of mine has one and has not experienced any screen discoloration. I think that any phone model is subject to a couple of bad lemons; so if you are thinking of the V30, do not let that discourage you. You can always return it if you do not enjoy it!

Please feel free to ask any further questions!

Went with V30 in the end. That lower price was hard to beat and after doing some more research I kind of dig the V30's focus on camera, even if it is not the best out of the bunch. Wide angle lens seems fun and a unique point, and it ticks most of the other boxes for me. We'll see how it goes :)

Thanks for the help :)

So glad you told I advantage of that amazing deal! Excellent choice! Enjoy your new V30!
