Buddy of mine had a few decently powerful magnets (not like earth magnets but still decent) in his hand and was picking something else up near my phone. I'm curious if it could cause and damage. I was thinking there are plenty of cases that use magnets for mounting. But I wanted to ask the community for thoughts

Current is produced using magnetic field, and magnetic field are produced by current. Both of those would be detrimental to any computing device if large and powerful enough.

Also the magnets were in my buddy's hand. Would his hand shield some of that field at all

Technically possible but highly unlikely unless you had some crazy powerful magnets

Don't agree, used fairly small magnets to wipe harddrives in the past. Solid state devices are not that robust and can be zapped very easily.

I've used a magnet for my car the past 5 years and haven't had any issues on any devices. Love mounting my phone to a vent, it's so convenient!
