Saw this on Lifehacker. Sounds like the new Nexus 7 doesn't even need any alterations done to the spindle prior (for vertical at least), just pop it in!

Yes, but what if zombies burst into your house while you're watching your N7 on its sharp spindle-shaped stand? Grab that baby and plunge it straight into the neck! Can't do that with cardboard.

Unless it's really stiff, sharp cardboard, I guess.
