Making a Case for Ugly

Okay, I'm not into hyperconsumerism and I pride myself on being careful with my "stuff." But this morning, in some sort of brain fog (no, it wasn't that ;)), I got up in the dark and placed my phone on my 4' (1.2192 metres for all of you non-American readers) dresser, pulled on my pants and grabbed (truth be told, yanked) the shirt I had placed on the dresser. Imagine my surprise (and chagrin) when I heard a deafening (well, okay, deafening may be a bit of an exaggeration) loud thud come from the hard, wooden floor. Folks, I had placed my beloved Pixel 8 Pro on that shirt instead of on the dresser and when I yanked my shirt off the dresser, the phone did a "Buzz Lightyear" and flew up and across the room, crashing heavily onto the hard floor.

If this were a typical tale, I'd be shedding crocodile tears and looking for some commiseration from all of you here, but this "oops" story is one of those rare dramas with a happy ending. Thanks to the Spigen Tough Armor case closely embracing and protecting my Pixel 8 Pro, there was nary a scratch, dent, ding or otherwise offending blemish to report on my still perfectly functioning device. Now, if that ain't tough love, I don't know what is!

Moral of the story: It doesn't matter what you look like on the outside, it's what's on the inside that counts. My Spigen Tough Armor case may be colourless, big, bulky and ugly, but I sure do love it - even more after this morning. :)

I like Spigen and have used their cases since 2016 with my LG V20. I've never had the type you have, but I've had good results with all of them. My latest for my S24 Ultra is the Spigen Neo Hybrid Designed for Galaxy S24 Ultra Case (2024) [Military-Grade Protection] - Gunmetal. So far, so good with this one, as with the previous ones.

That's actually an attractive case. I didn't know Spigen knew how to appealing. 😉 I haven't seen anything like that for any of the Pixel series.

Function Over Form to me is the same as RTFM and applies to all areas of life (within reason).

While the S23 Ultra is super slim, I make it look like it It time traveled from 2015 with a few extra pounds.

My go to is usually Supcase Unicorn Beatle Pro (though I always glue the kickstand down). Alternate FNT Case, budget version of Supcase and Poetic. Last choice is Poetic Spartan, no belt clip means last choice.

For me, one of the most important aspects of a case is grip, especially along the edges, since that's often where I'll hold the phone when taking it out of a pocket. If there's poor grip, then there's a higher chance of the phone slipping out and then going smashy-smashy. My main case right now is from Woodgraw, based in Ukraine -- I love that they have wood veneer backs that can be fully customizable, but on top of that, the side edges have a great grippy texture. I've dropped my phone a few times, with no apparent damage.

The design is the old logo for JR Raphael's Android Intelligence newsletter, which I subscribe to. I simply sent a JPG of the design to the casemaker, and voila!
