Is malware & viral concerns an issue for the Note 8 android?
(i'm coming from iphone where less a concern)
How do I know if I'm currently infected and compromised?
Is there any protection app that is suggested?
What are best practices here?

there are antivirus apps from Google Play. I use Lookout. if you're careful about where you get your apps, etc. you shouldn't have a problem. I never have had one.

As long as you stick to Play Store or Amazon, you should be fine for the most part.

You have to learn about permissions. But in general, if the same app exists on iOS, from the same developer, then it's got the same permissions anyway, so you can start with those apps.

Also do not install any app outside of Play Store, Amazon, or Samsung Galaxy App Store. XDA is a good source too.

If you think there are no concerns in iOS, then you are at risk already. https://www.macrumors.com/2017/10/10/apple-ios-phishing-attack-concept/

My opinion is that most of the monitoring programs are as big a risk as anything, because they need deep permissions and then become an attack vector. The best advice is to be careful and not install a bazillion apps from sketchy developers and then give them permission to everything.

And...when downloading from Play Store or Amazon, always look at the reviews on the app you're considering. I've NEVER used any virus protection or malware protection on any of my android devices, and have NEVER been affected by any viruses. You'll be fine, just be smart! -Chris
