Hi, I have the sprint S3 and still havent received the new update pushed to my phone. So, I read the thread about downloading the official update and saving it to the sd card and manually updating it. I've downloaded the update and when I do the stock recovery mode to apply the update, the zip file isnt selectable under the external sd card. I plug my phone to the computer, check the card and the zip file (update) is on the card. So the issue is why is it on my sd card, but in stock recovery not available under my card when I know its on the card. Also, I have deleted it and redownloaded it mutiple times as well. Thank you for the help.

Is the file in the top level of the SD card, and not in a folder? If that's not it, try copying the file to the top of the internal SD card and see if that makes a difference.

To use Stock Recovery it must be named update.zip, but you may need to be Rooted to use that zip file.

Does anyone know if the official md4 update zip will work on my phone. It has mb1(baseband) and LJ7 (build). I really want to update it already and the ota update I keep getting leaves my phone the same.

If you're talking about this thread, the method in post #1 (assuming you're not rooted) requires you to be on MB1 first.

http://forums.androidcentral.com/sprint-galaxy-s-iii/272331-your-way-update-md4.html

You can manually update from LJ7 to MB1 following the instructions in this thread:

http://forums.androidcentral.com/sprint-galaxy-s-iii/257471-your-way-update-mb1.html

I'm not sure if the fact that your baseband is already MB1 will prevent that from working or not. If it won't work, come back and let us know.

So I can use the update even if build is not mb1 but baseband is. Also I'm on 4.1.1. Does that affect the update.

That's not quite what I said. If the ROM is LJ7 (which is 4.1.1) you'll need to update to MB1first. After you're on MB1, then you can do the update to MD4.

I'm not sure if having the ROM and modem on different versions will cause a problem or not. Only way to know for sure is to try.

So I went to the thread (you way to update to mb1) to see if it will fix my build but when I tried installing zip I get an error message and it aborts. What could be the cause of this.

Are you, or have you ever been rooted? Do you have CWM or TWRP recovery installed?

Are you copying the update zip file into the top level of the SD card, or into a folder (subdirectory)? If it's in a folder, move it to the top level and try again.

OK, after doing some research, I think this error is probably related to having been rooted. What is your flash counter at? You can check by booting into download mode. If it's not zero, the factory update.zip isn't going to work. Also check device status: Settings / About device, then scroll to the bottom of the page. Is Device status normal, or modified?

If these aren't 0, and normal, update.zip won't work. You may need to root again, apply the update manually, and then unroot if you really don't want to be rooted.

I would strongly suggest this process for rooting: http://forums.androidcentral.com/sp...e-updated-how-root-your-sprint-galaxy-s3.html

Then post #2 of this thread for updating: http://forums.androidcentral.com/sprint-galaxy-s-iii/272331-your-way-update-md4.html

Why did you unroot? You can stay on the stock ROM while rooted, so in my opinion there's really no need to unroot unless you're returning the phone to Sprint or Samsung for service.

But if you want to unroot, go here: http://forums.androidcentral.com/sp...-30-2012-sprint-only-unroot-return-stock.html

If you're going to unroot, be sure to read that entire thread. Part way through, in post 451 there's a newer ROM than the one in the OP. I'd use that one. Note that after unrooting you may not be on the most current ROM, in which case you'll have to apply the OTAs to get current. But at least the OTAs will work.

First of all when first tried rooting it never worked for me only custom recovery did so I decided to us a zip that unroots, returns to stock and resets flash counters. Then an ota update took place and noticed only the baseband changed. Didn't want to root again but if its my only option I will try it latter hopefully it will work this time. Thanks for your help, will keep you posted on how it goes.
