I also can't get the manual update to work. I got the OTA this morning, but it crashed at about 1/4 way through and won't let me try again (says I'm up to date, even though my version is FROYO.EC05). Downloaded the official version from the Google servers, but it fails:

I'm rooted, but nothing else. Verified on the phone that the file is "update.zip". Earlier it was failing because of another .apk and I realized it was part of the bloatware that I removed. I put all the bloatware back, but now it's still stuck on the Gmail.apk. I used sdx stock app remover to remove the current version and put my back-up copy in its place, but still nothing. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling, I've downloaded updates from the Market, still nothing. I found in another forum here the .tar of all the stock .apks, so I got the Gmail.apk and put it in the system/app folder using Root Explorer, rebooted, still same error message.
Any ideas? I really don't want to wipe it...

So, I think there's something wrong with my stock Gmail files. When I delete all of the Gmail updates, Gmail won't run on my phone, even though the Gmail.apk is in the system/app folder. Does anyone know what files are associated with Gmail that I could try to replace to see if I can get it working again?
Thanks!
