manual update won't work

I also can't get the manual update to work. I got the OTA this morning, but it crashed at about 1/4 way through and won't let me try again (says I'm up to date, even though my version is FROYO.EC05). Downloaded the official version from the Google servers, but it fails:

Clockwork Mod Recovery v2.5.1.0

E:Error in /sdcard/update.zip

Installation aborted.

I'm rooted, but nothing else. Verified on the phone that the file is "update.zip". Earlier it was failing because of another .apk and I realized it was part of the bloatware that I removed. I put all the bloatware back, but now it's still stuck on the Gmail.apk. I used sdx stock app remover to remove the current version and put my back-up copy in its place, but still nothing. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling, I've downloaded updates from the Market, still nothing. I found in another forum here the .tar of all the stock .apks, so I got the Gmail.apk and put it in the system/app folder using Root Explorer, rebooted, still same error message.

Any ideas? I really don't want to wipe it...

The update will not install on rooted phones using either update.zip or the ota. If your rooted you must go back to stock unrooted to use ota or update.zip.

+ 1 on what keithvetter said.

Procedure #1
[How to] Factory Restore (or Fix a Bricked Phone)

Thats it... Make your backups with Titanium or Mybackup Root to restore after you update if you choose to root again.

Not sure... Possible that Google/Samsung/Sprint did something...

Just telling you what I know works, thats all..

FYI, Google patched the use of One Click Root exploits we had in Eclair & Froyo for Gingerbread so it tells you they have been watching...

Ha. Interesting. Thanks for the help. I moved my Gmail issue to a new thread - hopefully someone has a fix for it. :)
