Manually updating android

Im trying to manually update my mytouch 4g to the new version of android but having a problem I have it saved to my sd card but when I try to install it in recovery says cant open so I deleted it re downloaded it and still have same problem any one know what im doing wrong

What version are you trying to update to? If you're trying to her gingerbread it's not officially available for this phone yet.

You would have to root and flash cyanogen 7.
