Maps crashing when not in use

My maps app keeps crashing even though the app is not in use. I've cleared the cache, data and even force stopped it but it keeps crashing. Any ideas?

same here for s4 "its says unfortunately maps stopped". Is there a fix. Its so annoying.

Same problem...no matter what program I'm using, phone freezes about every half hour and says "unfortunately maps stopped". Driving me crazy. Finally I deleted all the updates for maps, which brought me back to version 7.0.2. Stops the problem, but want the updates without the problem, of course!! I think It happened right after the last update about a week ago, but how to update up until that point and stop? ....just in case I don't see a fix for it!

Same problem here. App crashes without use. Happens on my Nexus 4 and Samsung Note 10.1
