? mark in battery status indicator

my friends droid is showing a ? mark in the battery status indicator, he has tried reseating the battery a couple of times, no help.
Does he have a bad battery?
Should he try cleaning the contacts on the battery to see if that helps?
Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Sounds like the battery isn't being read right by the system. Could be a bad battery, bad connections, or faulty derive.
