Mate 20 X

How you been getting on with it?
I'm still loving it. Best phone I've had in a while.

Pros:
Screen quality
Screen size
Speakers
M-Pen
Camera is absolutely bonkers amazing
EMUI - continues to be improved. It has loads of pretty inventive tools and functions.
Works perfectly on AT&T

Cons:
Weight - the weight doesn't bother me too much, but it's definitely a hefty phone. Long reading sessions or Instagram scrolling wreaks havoc on my pinky finger.
Lack of quality cases and accessories
M-Pen - it's very useful and very accurate, but I wish it had more functions like the Note's pen. Also, it's a stand-alone accessory. I wish there were a case into which the pen could slide. I'm constantly worried that I'll misplace it.
EMUI - still needs work.

I see flossy carter has got a mate 20 X now, will be interesting to see what he thinks of it....

Also this is a question for any mate 20 X owners, have you noticed this screen dimming as mentioned by Damir in his Mate 20 Pro review??

I'm curious to see Flossy's opinion too. He seems to like large phones, so I'm sure he'll like quite a few things that the 20X offers.

I watched the YouTube video that you posted. It seems to be a fairly straightforward opinion video, but you can tell he's not a fan of Huawei or EMUI. So, even though the video appears to be pretty fair, their are some under the radar biases in their.

I have not experienced the dimming issues that he talks about. I've tried to replicate it with both automatic dimming and manual dimming, but I get nothing.
The only thing I've run into regarding the screen is if I reboot the phone with auto-adjust brightness turned off, it is turned back on after the phone boots up. Annoying, but no big deal.

I can't comment in the 20x but I in no way can get my mate 20 pro to do the screen dimming. I try switching all kinds of apps around. It has to be so subtle that most people don't notice it. He talks about screen flicker too and I have no idea how he sees something like that. It must be a epilepsy thing.

and it's not that curved crap that Samsung is doing
100% AND less likely to shatter, Im sure the UX and industrial design department at Sammy thought, how can we make a phone that needs to be replaced, I know doubled edged glass back and front, surprised some dishwashing liquid didnt come in a box.

So stoked to a flatscreen phone, so sick of these edges. I almost regressed into buying a Note 5.

One question though, does the 20x have any Office or productivity specific to the 20x like the Note does?

Chuck this puppy on that little logitech KB and you have a mean portable working machine.

I don't like that there's still a chin, though it is minimal. I don't like it because it just screams "we wanted to make it totally bezel-less but were unable to."

Its a phone not a dress or a car. This is the problem, aesthetics over function never wins with productivity equipment. I dont buy a new phone every year and I dont use a phone as a status symbol so I certainly care less if people see my phone has a chin....

Seriously. This is why apple is losing game on Macbook Pro, it never looked that good and the 13", since when has it ever had anything Pro in it? And it still hasnt changed generally in aesthetics in 10 years, let alone terrible thermals and industrial design. MS are killin it with the Studio line. Phones and maybe beats is holding apple up, but I can see them sliding back down to macintosh like the good old days where everyone hid it in their base ment in fear of embarrassment.

Sure, higher spec resolutions are vibrant and punchy, but 1080p is still very nice. My 50 inch TV is 1080p and it performs perfectly fine.
Im with you, I still have a 70" Sony and dont plan on changing until Amoleds come down.

For me the big factor about this screen;
- DCI-P3
- HDR10

Thats a big colour Gamut and should play HDR on Netflix which is a bigger deal than resolution. In saying that on phones and TVs the sweet spot is 1440p and HDR, 4k was just a gimmick imo. I dont even use 4k for photography, but I dont shoot video either.

Also its a battery juice saver.

So movies should look sick on this, being such a big screen too, I really feel this is the sweet spot to knock out Tablets but still be usable as a phone, but also be a productivity machine, M Pen as mouse, Logitech BT Mini KB and I no longer need a notebook on holiday.

Does anyone have suggestion for a decent discrete bluetooth ear piece for calls?

Also Ive seen the Pro screen nits scores, has anyone got a link to the 20 x brightness scores?

No WIFI calling in the US, No LTE band 66, 71

I didnt think it was available in the US. Which is a real shame as it completely poops all over the Galaxy and Apple.

Huawei and Leica making a real game changer in camera phones. Id like to see the P30 take the route of a 1" sensor and a single 28mm lens, which would take on a lot of high quality travel cameras. F1.8. Would give the ability to produce quality blur without software.

Which is what makes the Huawei so awesome, it doesnt need smoke and mirrors like the Pixel, it utilises an awesome sensor and lenses and simply uses the correct arperture and other settings for night mode, which is why it looks realistic in exposure and colour saturation.

Huawei really need to hit the US market better. Ive never bought a flagship as none are worth the price. The hardware inside the 20 pro and 20 x are worth the $1000 or whatever it costs where you are.

That Damir review is a joke. Its simply bias. I love it when people stick their neck out without really having used the phone for what its designed for, then major reviewers give it the best phone of 2018.

I would however love Samsung to take the Note and remove it from the Galaxy line, give it a flat screen like the 20 x, and implement more productivity software which would be good UX design, thats what the phone is designed for, the professional man. Im sick of seeing it tsuck in the "Fashion" Galaxy line. The Mate 20 x fails in software for the M Pen vs the Samsung and this is hopefully something it will improve on next time round.

I was so tempted to buy a new Samsung Note 5 for the Note features and flat screen. But being a photographer the Mate 20 x means I can leave the 1" RX100 v at home. It wont replace my APSC or Full Frame cameras, but for social media and possibly even a4 prints it should do ok.

If anyone is using this phone in USA it would be great to hear about it! Thanks!

I'm using the global model on AT&T with no issues.
SMS and MMS texting works without issue.
Calls are loud and clear.
Getting LTE speeds.
Camera is outstanding.
Screen is vivid and bright.

If you have any questions, just ask.

Have you tried the ir blaster or led notifications?

IR blaster works just fine. I really never thought I'd use that, but I do all the time now.

There are no LEDs for notifications on this phone. At first, I was pretty frustrated by this, but it's not an issue now. If you have a smartwatch or activity tracker that's capable of getting notifications, you'll get used to having no LEDs on the phone really quickly. Still, I think it was a bonehead move by Huawei to get rid of them.

That's a bit ridiculous. Different if they upgraded the AOD to show all notifications then remove the led like LG/Google etc

Ya it is too bad. The two Huawei features I loved were ir blaster and led notifications.

Is it true that you must use their browser and others cannot be installed?

My 2 complains of the 20x would be 1) always on display did not display notices for WhatsApp or any app [or is it a setting issue? Would like to hear from anyone who could make it to do it?] 2) my photo album names keep turning off out of a sudden. See pic attached. Would like to hear from any who could tell me it's me, not the phone?
