Maximum number of SMS?

I have sms messages going back years. It appears that some contacts are cut off after a certain number of messages. Other less frequently texted contact go back many years. I looked in settings and can't find a default, also I tried hanghouts and they're not there. Any ideas what's going on? Maybe SMS backup and restore failed me?

If you're using the standard messaging app, go to settings - general settings, storage. There you can set the number of messages to keep, or choose not to limit the number.

Settings wasn't showing up until after I deleted all messages and restored. I downloaded the user manual and that option wasn't there. I have an old backup so should be able to restore.
