Bought a USB adapter for $1.50 and can view and manipulate files on a flash drive. I used Astro to do it. Root not required.
I did go into settings-storage-unmount drive before unplugging it.

Great news. I'm a truck driver and want to be able to bring my music and video library along and not worry about using up my data. I currently have a Galaxy S4 with a 64gb memory card.

My test drive is a 32G formatted with fat 32. Maybe you can buy a special cable where you can charge and connect a flash drive at same time.

I think that there is no question the new droid phones support Micro SD cards but Motorola choose to exclude the required physical port.
