May switch from iPhone to Note 3. How does the Note 3 camera stack-up??

Hi,

I've had an iphone for the last 4 years. The camera is a very important feature to me. On vacations I have to use the camera on my iphone 5, rather than to break-out my point and shoot camera.

I'm looking to take advantage of T-Mobile's offering and switch to a phone with a bigger screen. I'm not interested in the S4, just the Note 3. My only hesitation is the camera. I seem to read mixed reviews on it. My brother has the note 3 and mentioned it takes an awful long time for it to focus on a subject to take a picture. Not sure if this user error or not.

I'm hoping someone can speak objectively on the camera of the Note 3. Maybe someone has made the change from the 5 to the Note 3, and can speak to the perforamance. I'm interested in your thoughts!

I never used iphone, but comparing to my HTC One X, Note 3 does take longer to focus, and doesn't seem to take as stable images.

It definitely would not replace my camera, which I don't have one atm, lol.

I have the N3 and wife has the IP5. We have done a few comparisons. N3 came out better most of the time. That being said, interior/low light shots are always hit and miss no matter which phone you are shooting with. I haven't noticed long focus times but it does some sort of post processing which takes a sec or two. There are so many settings for camera that it will take some time to get it dialed in. Also, there is no fuzzy/hazy shots like the IP5. Most of my shots are indoor shots with none to moderate lighting and I have far more good shots than bad shots. Also, video is better than pictures. It's all subjective but you won't be disappointed with N3 camera.

I have just swapped to the note 3 from a iPhone 5 and have always had iPhone's this is my first Android phone and can honestly say that everything about this phone is a lot better than any iPhone I have owned (I do miss iMessage though) I was a bit worried about buying a Android phone at first but really wanted a change because I had been using iOS for so long and I don't regret it one bit.

The Camera is very good! If your using it for scenery shots it's amazing much more detail than the iPhone 5/5s every shot isn't perfect though like the iPhone you will get some bad out of focus photos if people are moving or you shake the phone by accident.

I will say though the stock camera app isn't that great maybe a software update will fix it but for now i've tried most of the camera apps in the playstore and Camera FV-5 is by far the best. You have a lot of DSLR like settings so you can tweak it to your liking I get some really amazing photos with it people can't belive they have been taken with a phone.

It's not easy to take a decent non-blurry shot indoors, even when it's well lit. The auto-focus is slow and wonky and you have to be rock steady. And in the 4128 x 3096 mode it takes 1.5 seconds to save your picture after each shot. With my previous phone, an old iPhone 4, it was much faster and easier to obtain usable shots. And the difference in picture quality doesn't seem that big.

My other big complaint about the Note 3, even after months of using it, I'm constantly pressing the back and menu buttons on the bottom and the off button on the side, interrupting whatever I'm doing. Also, you can't make a phone call by voice command while the phone's in your pocket. I'm more annoyed by the many hours I wasted trying to get it to work. That smidgen of extra slop and inattentive design in the Note 3, the little annoyances, make a big difference to me I realized. Most people don't seem to mind though.

I have iphone 5s and note 3... iphone 5s the best camera no doubt in photos and videos both...

The camera is ok, mine come out blurry at times or just not very clear. However I've never been able to take a good photo with any phone I've had lol. I'm a poor photographer lol. I will say that a phone I was able to just point and shoot and the photos came great was the nokia 1020 and I've never been able to do that with any phone.

I agree with those that say the iPhone 5S has the better quick shoot camera. It takes absolutely fantastic photos will little to know effort. Now with that said the N3 can take absolutely great photos, but its a slower process and the hardware/camera is clunker and takes more time to focus and save the photos. The fact is the iPhone 5S kicks N3 *** when it comes to speed of taking and saving pictures. Anyone that says otherwise is just totally in denial. Overall I am very happy I switched to a N3 and I don't see myself ever going back to a iPhone unless Apple gets off their asses and gives us a nice big screen phone at least around 5.5" anything less forget it. The N3 pictures are good enough for me, but I do miss the iPhone 5S camera I can tell you that.

When I first got the note (I had an iPhone 4s previously) I was really disappointed in the camera. I thought that it would be a lot better but most photos I took turned out blurry or just bad. I was really disappointed as I take a lot of photos (I've had my phone since Sept and I have over 1500 in my gallery) and really considered swapping it in for a newer iPhone.

BUT, rather than throw it away without using it more and learning about it I decided to stick with it. I do like the different types of photos you can take with the note (like the sound shot where you can have a 10sec voice clip with a photo which has been nice for moments where you would love to remember the sounds during a moment in time or best photo where it takes 8 in a row and let's you choose which ones you want to save). I have figured out how to take better photos with the phone and I think that the quality on the note vs iPhone is much the same, in some circumstances better. I also love that when you are recording video you can snap photos at the same time, which has came in really handy for me.

One thing I will say that I do still miss is that there was no delay when you snapped a photo on the iPhone - which was great when you have a subject that won't stay still, even for that 1-2 second delay.

I haven't really checked out any of the camera apps to see if perhaps there is something better out there ..but I see a few suggestions on your other replies which I think I will try out myself now too!
