Media Card vs Internal Storage

[Goodness]

When I connect the phone to my Mac, I only one disk drive (media card). I was expecting to also see the disk drive for internal memory.

Can anyone shed some light?

Also -- how do I make the media card the default location for when I download pics and vid?
