Given that a phone's display is unlikely to have more than 2 megapixels, and many have a lot less, where is the advantage in viewing photos with more than that? Obviously there is in practice, but I don't see how it works. How does a 2 mp screen display an 8mp image, say?

Thanks, it makes some interesting points. Of course I was forgetting the importance of being able crop. It also means I've been wrong to exclude the HTC One as a possible buy for fear of poor camera performance from the 4mp sensor. With moderate cropping it would still be fine.

I like to create my own backgrounds for for my computer at work. I have dual monitors with a total resolution of 3840x1200. My Note3 pictures need only a slight cropping to match that resolution. This makes for the clearest backgrounds possible. I only wish Samsung would allow uncompressed pictures. The jpg compression is more noticeable when stretched over 3 feet.
