Message "Unfortunately, My Places Engine has stopped" will not go away

"Unfortunately, My Places Engine has stopped" returns immediately when I press"OK". I cannot get to the screen to apply a fix. My G4 is unusable. Are there any options short of a factory reset?

Are you able to get it into Safe Mode?
