Messages consistently uses more battery than phone by a long way. Seems counterintuitive?

If you get a lot of text messages throughout the day, and each message is triggering an audible/vibration notification, that can add up and use a fair amount of battery. I have a secure texting app for work in a hospital, and on call days, that app just chews through battery because nurses are texting me nonstop.
