Messages app very slow to load on pixel 4a 5G

Just set up my pixel 4a 5G finally moving over from the 3a XL. This phone is severly disappointing me so far. My number one complaint is the messages app is so slow to open text threads. It is going to be a deal breaker if I don't get it figured out soon. Another thing I'm surprised at is the overall responsiveness of trh phone. I had thought coming over from the 3a which was only a tad sluggish here and there, that this phone would zip, but so far that has not been the case. Anyway if anyone has any REAL solutions for the messages app issue (like not "clear the app cache") I'd be grateful to hear them.

First, I assume the phone still isn't in the middle of the initial setup, correct? While the phone is still setting up (i.e., automatically installing your apps, finishing up any system updates), it might be a little more sluggish).

How many message threads do you have? If you have a huge number, that might slow things down.

Clearing the app cache is still a reasonable troubleshooting steps, so I would still call that a potential REAL solution if you haven't tried it already.

Also, see if the problems persist in Safe Mode -- since Google Messages is preinstalled, it should still work in Safe Mode: https://support.google.com/pixelphone/answer/2852139?hl=en

Well I say not a real solution because there are dozens of threads all over the Google support about this topic with none of the "simple fixes" working. I was just coming here to see if someone had dealt with it and found something that worked. My phone is through the regular setup I'm on day 4 or 5 now. I did bring over my text history, which is important, and I have done so on every other phone I have had.

Try resetting the message app by long pressing then tap info scroll to storage and clear data and force stop.

Ok, then can you tell us if it's still sluggish in Safe Mode?

So bizarre... The problem just went away one day. Messages seems to work just fine now, buy boy oh boy was that past week a pain. I'm probably going to try factory reset my phone again to fix a Bluetooth issue I'm having so I'll pray it doesn't return.

Glad to hear it cleared up -- I wonder if it had anything to do with some of the outages Google suffered around that time? Hope it stays good for you!
