Messaging app keeps force closing. Rebooted, pulled battery, stopped the app, cleared data. Nothing is working. Anyone else having this problem?

Had to factory reset it. Not happy about that. Reverted back to older play store too. Makes no sense.

YES!!! I replace mine and the second one still does the same thing. It began to work after about 24hrs after the 1st crash/ reset. My second phone worked for a day with no problems now its doing the same thing. I emailed same samsung about it because I think its a software issue related to received pics in messaging. An update should fix it but who knows when thats gonna happen. You should email them as well so they can elevate the issue if they get enough complaints.

I can confirm that this happens to me as well when I receive picture messages. It seems the only way to stop it is a factory reset, which I've done once already

Edit: I've figured out a little workaround until it gets officially fixed. I downloaded a third party messaging app (I used Handcent SMS) and it downloaded the attachment correctly, even in the stock messaging app.

I have been encountering A LOT of hangups with Messaging Application... It will either hang or not display messages that have come in. Just now I received a 2 SMS's, got notification on my Pebble watch but only see 1 message on the phone.

What don't you guys understand about when you purchase a Samsung phone you will not get a good software experience. This phone will lag in messaging just as the GS2, GS3, GN1, GN2. The SMS issues along with horrible wake time has been reported to Sammy by thousands of people but they continue to slap the same bloated OS on every galaxy line phone and say screw the consumer. I for one will NEVER purchase another Sammy phone, especially with all of the new competition that starving for a piece of the pie.

LOL you're funny.

I've had the GS3, GN2 and NEVER had an issue with any lag in messaging. Sammy sold 38 million units when the S3 was released seems to me that people are happy with them. I love the GalaxyS line

Mine just started to do this last night. I've noticed that after a phone call the messaging app will work again then if I send MMS or receive it'll lock up again.

Edit: Works just fine with Go SMS Pro. Stock App still constantly crashing.

I just had this same problem when a friend sent an MMS message. I downloaded go SMSpro to open the mms and now stock messaging app works fine.

I had this problem happen to me the other night after a friend sent me a pic. Rebooted, pulled battery and nothing was working. But browsed around different forums to find out what's wrong and best I found and seemed to work for me is this:

Were you on Wi-Fi when the problem happened? Most cases I saw that this occurred is when they are currently on Wi-FI. If that's the case, isolate the message that you think is causing the "force close", disable Wi-Fi on your S4 and you should be able to navigate through your messaging app. Delete the MMS that won't download (or the whole thread for your peace of mind) and you should be able to revive your messaging app once you go back on Wi-Fi. Worked fine for me and haven't had any issues since.

Well that and I told my friend to stop having her phone infecting mine with the herps... LOL

All, there is a workaround! Many thanks to a great Vodafone helpdesk rep. I give no thanks to the Samsung customer services team who are either not acknowledging this issue or just unaware, I think the former. Anyway, download the app Go SMS Pro, delete the offending MMS message, voila!

A recent Sprint internal memo confirmed a bug with the messaging app when connected to a wifi source with a name that has special characters in the name (anything other than letters). Update was coming. Might have been in the last update this past week. I haven't seen what all it was supposed to include.

i will try changing my Wifi name then.

tested it after changing Wifi name and it seems to be working now

I had a similar problem with my Messenger app. What happens is that the chat heads force close when I click them instead of just minimizing. For me to be able to reply to messages I had to open the Messenger app again. No chat heads pop up even if in my Messenger's settings, the chat heads are activated. NOW..THERE IS NO NEED TO USE FACTORY RESET ON YOUR PHONE. All you gotta do is go to your phone's Settings -> Apps -> Messenger then click FORCE STOP. And then open your Messenger app again. Voila! I hope this solution works for you as well.
