Messaging notifications

Is there a way to stop the notification tones from reoccurring when you have a message thread open? I really don't enjoy hearing a ding each time I get a response from the person that I'm trying to carry a conversation with. I can accept it for new conversations but once the thread is open is there any way to stop the notification from continually activating.

Welcome to Android Central! Are you using the stock messaging app, or a 3rd party one? Most stock messaging apps actually don't give a tone when the thread is open (which people tend to complain more often about on this forum!), while certain 3rd party messaging apps (like Textra, I think) will do that.
