Messenger multiple notifications

When I receive a new message via Messenger, I get two notification sounds. First I get a Facebook "Pop" sound, and then a few seconds later, a Messenger "Ding" sound. I can't for the life of me figure out why I get duplicate sounds for each notification, and I'd like to get rid of the "pop" sound. I'm on an original Pixel XL, and I'm up-to-date with my Android updates. I want to say this has been going on for several months, maybe longer.

Do you get two notifications as well? Have you checked you aren't receiving that in two apps or if you set up Push notifications for Chrome on messenger.com? Try disabling chat heads, does that help? (When using chat heads Messenger does display two notifications; one for the 'new message' and one for the 'always running' chat heads, but the latter shouldn't make any notification sounds).

I disabled chat heads, and the problem seemed to go away. I re-enabled them, and it still seems to be working properly now, so maybe that did it.

it appears it was only temporary, it came back. There is also a significant delay between the notification sounds, like 3-5 seconds. shutting off the chat heads just fixed it again.

If you have both apps signed in on your phone, my guess is they are both sending a notification for the same message. Because you can no longer access messages in the regular FB app, it's like the manager of your local post office ringing your doorbell, only to tell you that the mailman is about to arrive with a package, and then the mailman decides to knock and deliver it to you.

So check the main FB app and adjust the notification settings (I rarely use it and not completely familiar with its settings layout) and see if that gets rid of the "pop."
