Mic issues when using 3.5mm port

Hi Android Central community,

I'm looking for some advice when making calls and using the 3.5mm audio port. If I'm walking I'll be listening to something, or in the car I have a radio transmitter to play music or calls through the car speakers.
Since switching to the nexus 4 (from GNex), I'm getting complaints that the other person is struggling to hear me. I think the microphone is acting as if I have it next to my head, yet the Galaxy Nexus clearly switched to a speakerphone style setting?

Does anyone have any known fixes for this? I have no interest in a bluetooth setup, not fit for my purpose. I don't want or need earphones with a mic, holding the phone at chest level should be sufficient.

I have Tasker, but switching to speakerphone kills playback through the jack, so no help there.

Thanks for any suggestions. Please consider the above before replying.

I have the same exact problem

ditto

I have to hold the phone up and talk directly into the mic with the headphones attached regardless of whether I am in speaker phone mode or not.
